Fool Posted February 27, 2016 When i received this loph it was small standard looking L W . I beleive it has grown up instead of out due to not reveiving enough light on my window sil . I have now had it out in part shade for a few days and staring to red.Tinking either back to the window sil or try my greenhouse. Has anyone experienced this kind of growth with a loph? I have not seen any pictures anywhere that is similar.. Any help or comments welcome : )
Berengar Posted February 27, 2016 Yes, it is called etiolation, caused by insufficient lighting.
Conv3rgence Posted February 27, 2016 (edited) Perhaps cutting the etoliated growth and grafting it would be a good idea. The healed base of the plant will also pup. This is quite bad etoliation and it wont return to a nice shape, so grafting can turn one mishapen loph into 2 - 3+ normal shaped lophs over time. Fool Posted February 27, 2016 Thanks Berengar Googled that and yeah there are some trippy etoilated lophs and other cactus out there. Although not ideal some look kinda cool. Will try my little fella in my greenhouse with varying light to see how it settles down : )
Fool Posted February 27, 2016 That sounds like a good idea convergence. I have a blue torch i can graft on to. Just cautious because i am a virgin grafter ha. But if its not going to return to normal shape I guess I have nothing to lose. Do you think best grafting stock would be a trich or a blue torch?
Strontium Dawg Posted February 27, 2016 Bury it deeper, right up to that new growth.

Conv3rgence Posted February 27, 2016 (edited) It might be a bit late in the growing season to graft, especially if its your first time. Maybe do what glaukus says but i would suggest that it be buried in very coarse scoria or pumice with no organics, so its like a top dressing. The new growth with proper light and feeding should cause it to fatten up at the top, but with the skinny neck that will be supported by the top dressing. You can always look at grafting in Spring. Fool Posted December 6, 2016 So dont mean to bump an old thread but cheers for the advice Glaukus and convergence. Buried it in new pot and soil and filled the top up with perlite and it has started taking the prefered loph shape. Trippy if I grow it like this for a while and take it out would look kinda like a mini grafted loph. Didnt see your post sorry trichoceratops..Thats a mad pic and cheers for the warm welcome
