djmattz0r Posted November 21, 2015 My boss found this cactus from a local dude, he was told that it tends to grow prostrate once it gets larger. I was a bit confused by the geometric nature of the growth but now believe I know what it is. Would like to hear y'alls opinions.
0 2XB Posted November 21, 2015 lophocereus schottii monstrosus??
0 zed240 Posted November 21, 2015 Have you got a better picture of some of those spiny areoles? I can see why DB said L schotii as it does look quite similar. But if I was guessing for now, (which I am), I'd say maybe a T spachianus/santiaguensis monstrose.
0 wert Posted November 21, 2015 does it not look a little light green to be lophocereus?
0 Evil Genius Posted November 21, 2015 Pretty sure it´s Lophocereus. I grow the Santiaguensis and it has a different rib structure on the new growth and fairly golden spines. It´s a monstrose version of a Spachianus and judging by the fatness of this, it´s very similar to the Lophocereus monstrose.

0 zed240 Posted November 21, 2015 The bumpiness and sharp angular look is what said L schottii monstrose to me but it's the spines that made me think otherwsie. I don't remember the large L Schottii specimens I've seen having spines quite like those.... Spine pic closeup needed! ;)
0 djmattz0r Posted November 22, 2015 Sorry I have been very busy with cold weather approaching and 4 greenhouses + prop stock to protect. All snug and hopefully warm as the temps dip tonight. I will try to remember and get a close up picture of the aeroles tomorrow. I was leaning towards L. schotii monstrose from the angular growth but thought it was more T. santiaguensis monstrose looking overall. I was told by another person that it is a T. santiaguensis monstrose just a different clone or a rare growth pattern perhaps. I will have to look more into it and bring some aerole pictures soon! 0 djmattz0r Posted November 24, 2015 Realized I never delivered, so here ya go. Some juicy aeroles... These first 3 are from the cactus in question: And these other 2 pics are of some spines from other known T. santiaguensis monstrose in the greenhouse:
