Cactus of the month year day thread? Which cactus is really shining for you right now?

Recommended Posts

Trichocereus chickenfancy [a hybrid of schickendantzii and huasca v petch' I think] - the fat one..

2017-10-10 22.20.59.jpg2017-10-10 22.20.32.jpg

for looking more like the schickendantzii I have been tryna bag for years; than I had expected it to and than it's potmate.

Also Trichocereus tarijensis2017-10-10 22.20.43.jpgfor not looking much like the poco I familiarized with over the years yet gets a special ninja cactus of the moment erm .. award for it's thus stealthy camo'..

they look pretty spachy for now but with some spach's for comparison some reassurances are present

They're really gorgeous , it's views like this that make you know grafting is awesome in the long run..

reminds me of a taquimbalensis degraft I was lucky enough to behold from a cool SABber in Germany ..

astonishing beauty of the forms especially spination.

Any differences in degrafting and especialy rooting if the pasacana? Experiences?

I've no experience yet my first ever grafts were earlier this year..

I should imagine I will worry about the same when I catch up..

What I can say tho is:-

give it time to callous and heal/dry at the cut - tip i was told by a German grafter..

I assume that if placed on dry perlite in a pot they would dry/heal and root eventually - the general way to root a cactus cutting if you don't have a rack I guess?

- some go as far as to put a glass of water below so the plant can sense where to point roots at - a tip I was told by a grafter in Flo'

and if it's really good weather temps and so long as the degraft is entirely healed/dry at the cut then perhaps the perlite could be dampened - but only if the degraft has healed I guess? - a tip I was told by a Chinese cactus grafter..

but then it could also be buried while still attached to the graft in a deeper hole so the scion is at normal ground level and the stock is underground after filling in the hole around the plant - whether pot or in the ground.. - a tip I learned from a Cali cactus king..

-stuffs I've learned from the super SABbers in mind but not always in practice yet -but with a view toward that.

Saying that I have a terscheckii cutting that hasn't rooted in about 3 years and tried everything I can think of ..

making me a bit scared of the idea of rooting terscheckiis and maybe pasacana is similar, i know werdermannianus roots faster than a mo' 'cker tho so it's not all the fatties luckily - so maybe pasacana will be fine..

I'll bet there's better grafters on here with the necc' experience to sure-fire answer your question but that's the best I can think of :)

oh yeah i forgot they're not my first grafts .. but they are my first pereskiopsis grafts
.. but the only grafts I'd done before were to repair main columns.

Uppss. Double post.

Thanks for the tipps mate.

I ve heard, that rooting pasacana takes a bit and can be problematic.

I use birdsand and a heatingmat. Works good, soil temp above 20C.

Will see what the tersch. in catalunya us doing and how it is rooting.

Will see him in 3 weeks. Very exited.

No news from the grower. I wait in patience and confidence. Cheers mate.

cactus fam are enjoying spring.  need to get some nutrients into them though.  I'm making a compost tea.  scopulicola looks like it is budding - my first ever tricho flowers!

Congrats on getting your first flowers @∂an . Now, the next question will be what are you going to cross these new flowers with?

Got gifted this a few years back, no idea what it is but I saved some pollen anyway, might try crossing it with a trich somewhere down the line

Thanks @Inyan ! I guess she is going to have to pollinate herself as I don't have any other cacti flowering at the moment.  Am I right to assume trichocerus cacti can self pollinate?

Sadly, you will need a partner for this cacti that is not a clone. If you act now, someone may offer to send you some pollen in exchange for some seeds I'd be willing to bet. Just look @Matt1208 and his pollen above you. Or... look elsewhere for some pollen.

not all trichos are self-fertile but some are , .. and some that aren't can be induced with cement .. (I think it's a PH manipulation thing to trick flower to accept own)

I've been told scop can pollinate it's self before but haven't had flower experience yet so not seen this with my own eyes .. so , well scored there mate!  and if you can't get pollen , I guess there's nothing to lose from giving self-pollination a try.

Okay thanks.  Great idea!  My track record with growing cacti seeds isn't so good as I keep trying to do it outdoors where the birds, possums, slugs and snails get into them when they pop up.  So I'd definitely be keen for a pollen and seed trade!  I would be happy to pass the seeds on to someone who has the setup already.  I guess the flower still has a month or so to go?

I am loving my two bertramianus at the moment. These were grafted to Peres, then planted Peres and all in the ground. They have really taken of and are a picture of health. Touch wood!

I think this validus is me ole cactus of the year and probably my cactus of the decade too so far while we're at it.

2011-01-01 02.15.12.jpglabelled it Hawz validus to future reference it because so far I think it might be a clone we don't already have on the site and it's good to know which one's aren't just another clone of eachother.

My first ever buttons.  3.5 months old and growing in Dr Greenthumb's special blend (with a fine layer of washed river sand over the top to discourage algae).
