Cactus of the month year day thread? Which cactus is really shining for you right now?

Recommended Posts

Thanks Inyan, I agree that seed grown plants are super awesome to look at and watch grow, I have mostly abandoned buying cuttings, when seeds are so cheap in comparison to plants its a great way to get heaps of genetics in the collection when money is tight, not only that but watching every stage of growth is a real joy for me, atm I am really loving the idea of large amounts of echinopsis/trichocereus hybrids , I heard some can flower within 3 years from seed and that is exciting for creating future hybrids in a short time. This might not be easy but I really want to see a purple flower on a tricho dominant looking plant :drool2:

Would love to get seeds of a cereus/trichocereus hybrid, I have heard it can be done but is it true ? I have no idea but would be super cool if that was a real thing : )

I have become completely addicted to growing and collecting these plants, every so often I am having to scrounge round the property to build new little shelters, hothouses and greenhouses and such, thank goodness there is so much junk and stuff here when we got the property, I am just building shit out of what ever I can to keep it expanding lol, There is a ute here and the fella who owns it might be leaving it here and all i see is how the back tray could be turned into a little green house for seedlings lol  i have got seeds going all over the place in different stages, if i had a couple hundred bucks spare atm i would surely be buying more seeds from interbeing and prob really consider getting patricks nolls san pedro book (gonna have to sell some plants soon i think), the passion for the cacti is defo strong in me : )

I used to like pokemon when i was young, maybe that has had a psychological effect on me lol

I've seen some hybrids that have flowered in just over 2 years so not quite 3 years old and that is from seed grown on their own roots. So, I can definitely understand your desire to get in on some of those hybrids and start watching your own seedlings bloom rather than simply reading about others seedlings blooming. It is indeed exciting to dream of a purple Trichocereus dominant cultivar. I like that idea a lot. A diurnal blooming Trichocereus would be a bonus in my book as long as were dreaming.

That early flowering makes tge breeding more interesting and will bring some beautiful results in the future.

Today i went trough my garden and scops and scop hybrids catched my eyes. Would like to share. Some are small yet, but time will help...

@smithyWhat is not to like when you have a crested monstrous bridgessii?

Your collection is super diverse. I'm beginning to think you have unlimited space and reserves. I think it might be easier to list what you don't have.

goal was 4 specimens of every species of the 2 nicest cactical genusses and to make flowers so as to be able to reliably make a pure species seed source to retain the awesomeness of originals but then i learned more and then those naughty sabbages with their hybrids n stuff hooked me deeper than i imagined and then clones struck deep without my consent at first ... kids wanted more cute spikeys all the time especially fat cacties which all three loved

and hopefully it will be something they might find useful to keep the wheel turning when they're older if they still think they're cool ... so space wasnt a problem at first at my gramps old house with an acre offered for use to start an orchid and cactery but unfortunately the old bag was just up to her olde feminazi missandry and have been tryna protect everything from her ever since (2015) with everything from the cops to natural allies like my pet ants from florida who helped big time ... finally distance wasnt even enough for this nasty bastage but at least the law keep her away from the house and kids so far... but yeah man the collection intends to be a shrine to the power of plant magick and is probably why it actually worked in the end.. mother nature at least is a real mother.

tell a lie the initial goal was to have every dang species of cactus there ever was but 2 genusses seemed more manageable

she was so spiteful she took a fulvilanus spine and a chillensis spine and layed them on the carpet infront of my son's room and got him , after lying to cops to get me out and thus into homelessness during one of our harshest winters where many died out (been doing it since i was 16 and i was like , grey at 16)

-edit- and by spine i mean areole full , despicable cunt. - her intention was clearly to make them hate the cacti so she could then attack the plants and trick the kids into assisting much like back in history in other ways a generation earlier.. and he's too dead now to apologize to in live form

but this 'long game' germination seems worth it so far especially on the Acacial front too.

Trichocereus bridgesii 'shuttle' for cactus of the night... it's now just over 3foot (by 2 inches)

2017-10-07 20.05.36.jpg2017-10-07 20.05.03.jpg

and was bought at about 5 or 6 inches along in 2013 i think with about 12 others which were seedlings.. of which the other remaining few of; are only just over a foot tall, .. so you can see why I named it shuttle.

here it is in january 2014, well one of them is.. , not sure which one, if not, these were the same batch and maybe a different pot for at least some idea of it's juvenile stage size.

gallery_14443_734_266022.jpg

here it is back in late 2014, a growing season on, after dividing from the others probably some time earlier that year.
