decided to clip off the other tips of the seeds and release a scabrella that was practically hanging out of it's casing/jelly and had just begun it's tail wag :)

2017-02-07 23.08.42.jpg

moved all the seed tubs to the ixtlawattle [to fluctuate temps] and made up a few more tubes, added a third m' tenuiflora sprout to a tube after de-shelling it...

boiled up 5 A' mearnsii and added them to the tub collection...

that was a mistake to take these particular scabs out of their casing , none survived ... they did last time round but hey?

so I boiled up another five 3 days ago and tail pooping has just happened over the last few hours with only the ends of the seed coat clipped this time.

damn seed coats on mimosa scabrella!!!! Dx!

got 2 seedlings... and then fked em up tryna remove the crispy seed coat ...

this time round (last night) I sliced up the seed coat completely on one side and left it on .2017-02-26 15.17.03.jpg. so far so good

I rinsed and replaced all the tub's water...., took a rushed shot or 2 of the seedlings progress so far2017-02-26 16.01.25.jpg2017-02-26 16.01.42.jpg in between camera playing up troubles (!)

sowed the 3rd and final seeds of confusa and simplicifolia/simplex2017-02-26 15.17.49.jpg which vacated 2 soak tubs for 5 A' victoriae

2017-02-26 15.48.52.jpgand 5 A' maidenii , which I hot water tekked..

threw away all but one of the remaining phlebs since they'd rotted and gone squishy ... all rotted for obtusifolia ...

so Instead of boiling up another 2 phlebs I just scratched em and added them to the tepid/luke warm water that the last one standing was in...

same with another 4 obtusi seeds..., then gave it up for the day ... , maybe...

soaked up five more M' scabrella seed,

2 more M' ophthalmocentra (one died , one got damaged by seed coating I should've removed earlier)

2 more A' phlebophylla - used file , soak, total seed coat removal after too many rotters and only one remaining- added a bit of inoc to the water and minimized the water level drastically to barely a puddle they were sat in..

5 more A' obtusifolia -^^

4 more A' floribunda - ^^ - sowed one sproutlet

sowed 2 more A' mearnsii sproutlets

sowed one maidenii sproutlet

removed seed coating of all A' victoriae -2 rotters , only one looks ok..

waved 'hi' to two A' confusa and simplicifolia to celebrate their return to my life :)

aww, don't they all look cute when they're asleep?

finally some real success from the M' scabrella , i think they were just joking me about ,

I finally cracked the delicate procedure ,,,.2017-03-15 17.11.32.jpg2017-03-15 17.11.39.jpg

and then the latest batch sprouted with no help at all , which was a bit frus' but hey?

so I unzipped them anyway to be on the safe side and potted 4 sprouts up2017-03-15 22.11.30.jpg

also potted 2 M' ophthalmocentra completely unzipped of their nasty crispy-later-slice-a-tater seed coatings so as not to incur the same problems as last time ..,

finally an A' obtusifolia sprouted2017-03-15 17.23.42.jpg so in the pot it went,

potted up another A' maidenii sprout,

boiled up another 4 A' victoriae and 5 A' acuminata 'broad phyllode'

I think I underestimated just how "shallow" the puddle should be -prior to this latest couple of weeks, ,...

perhaps i was accidentally drowning some sensitive ones? maybe that's one reason why they might've rotted?

but that single phlebo didnt give a shit about depth tho ... hmmm

yeah so it looks like air is high on the list of importance with the sprouting/tail pooping ...

- virtually across the board of all the Mimosa and Acacia seeds I'm currently working with ,

- still some time yet to find out if A victoriae and if A acuminata broad phyllode is the same in their

"air surface to water surface 'in utero' requirement"

I used to generally follow the advice from WSS saying to basically have enough water in the soak tub to just cover them , but I'm finding this morning a 2nd phleb is just starting to sprout, ... just like the obtusifolia yesterday.. in far less water. .. despite one single phleb sticking it's middle tail up regardless of depth.. and a single maidenii and probably a few more but with the phlebs , all the others of the same batch were rotters at this kinda water depth, same with obtusifolia but kinda more so..

So I'm thinking that the best course of action is to have a small puddle or less; that the seeds are barely immersed in/sat upon, in an air tight (or thereabouts) tub, i think most of my tubs are slightly less than air-tight but they don't lose humidity much it seems, - can't have them drying out because of too little water eh? - also the windowsill seems to be king this month now the weather has turned from winter to spring, {i found the propagator ideal for sprouting in winter but too hot in spring , i wonder where else i could try when the north-facing windowsill I'm currently using gets too hot?

somewhere cooler anyway..

And after a complete removal of seedcasing or - with the exception of M' scabrella which appears to be too fast a process for it and seem to prefer just a little bit more than a "half equator slice"

(from top to bottom) until they sprout ..

.- with scabrella , I have potted up a few with the sliced seed coat still attached where the root sprout is still very tiny...,

but completely naked if the sprout root is already starting to curl..

its a good job I can document this so I can refer back to it in case one day they need starting again

so I'd better take some pics of the first signs of tail pooping/sprouting

The "sprouting" area I am using at the mo is the surface of some stone topping of a tricho pot on a north facing windowsill in middle england during a mild spring ...

perhaps even a fogging machine with no puddle of water would be even better?, maybe one day eh?

or is all this simply the benefit of the ash from the end of a palo santo stick?

potted all these A' floribunda up2017-03-20 13.55.10.jpg

and gna wait a lil longer for these 3 A' phlebophylla that appear to all be getting a little pointier at one end..2017-03-20 14.08.21.jpg

-sprouting has occurred at about 15C , a little slower this way but seemingly a tad more reliable and sure than at higher temps

planted out into the ground the large Acacia dealbata that survived all the way through since the homeless hostel :)

- it got a little singed by the BBQ though while it was a patio potted plant : / so didn't bother taking a pic since it looked so rekt for now ...

moved the small Acacia dealbata that I planted out last summer about a metre from it's initial site for better privacy when it's large if it gets there... hope it didn't get rekt cuz i read they hate being moved so fingers x'd that I got to it early in it's life enough...

well so much for cracking delicate procedure eh?

anyhow... this time round (with the M' scabrella) I just left them in the soak tub and allowed them to sprout away - totally unplanned and because some major shit hit the fan...

I just potted two up with a 3cm and 2cm tap root2017-06-15 15.12.11.jpg .. fingers x'd catching them late in their tail pooping is key ?

-edit to add pics during repeat process the next day-

2017-06-16 12.51.19.jpg2017-06-16 12.52.11.jpg2017-06-16 12.52.21.jpg2017-06-16 12.52.39.jpg2017-06-16 12.53.00.jpg2017-06-16 12.53.10.jpg dont try the squeezing pot method with stoney substrate - i used pure john innes#3 this time .., and in 7cm pots for a change since scabrella get big early in their development...

so just as an experiment I decided to further 'neglect' the tail pooping towers2017-06-15 15.11.33.jpg(with the exception of water changes) purposely

despite there being a whole range of sproutage going down...

potted up 3 replacement D' leptolobus sproots too2017-06-15 15.12.16.jpg

.. finally managed to get another gundabluey sproutling2017-06-15 14.54.57.jpgon the go with one more in the tail pooping pot ..

put mimosas tenuiflora and ophthalmocentra out for some sunshine and air..2017-06-15 15.14.37.jpg2017-06-15 15.14.51.jpg

and oh yeah , the ixtlawattle has been broken down because of a slight fault in the reptile heatmat (probably got too wet over the years) that caused it to melt so as a fire risk it's been fucked off until an appropriate replacement can be sought..., and also because of the seasonal abundance of natural heat and light ... and to give it a clean...#

... so the wattle growing venture has moved to a windowsill2017-06-15 15.13.01.jpg:3

well all the other gundabluey went blunder-gooey... , one was sprouting too..., maybe the solstice heat?

anyhow I potted up one of the phlebajas as it had grown a sufficiently long enough root I thought....

dipped it in inoc soil first...2017-06-20 20.03.33.jpg

the other one is working at that tap root production right now in distilled water (car battery top up water)

also potted up more confusa tap rooter tail poopers2017-06-20 20.03.44.jpg
