Philocacti Posted June 22, 2015 Good luck bogfrog:) I observed that all bridgesii monstrose forms I have (even some regular bridgesii) do way better grown in partial shade as opposed to full sun. I live in zone 14 (according to the American zone system). In full sun, a lot of these bridgesii become yellow and go dormant. I think it's like aestivation in reptiles and amphibians. However, grafting any of these forms to a stock that tolerates full sun, makes them "full sun tolerant"
spooge Posted June 24, 2015 (edited) i love this plant Philocacti, it is superb Edited June 24, 2015 by pimento
Philocacti Posted June 24, 2015 Thanks pimento:) I've noticed that this melted wax it like the other tbms, once it gets big enough, it grows pretty fast .......plus it grows faster and healthier in more shade ;) If I had a spot with more shade I would've placed there for a deeper green color
mutant Posted June 24, 2015 (edited) wow philocacti my man, this is easily the best looking specimen of melted wax I have seen... Edited June 24, 2015 by mutant
Philocacti Posted June 28, 2015 I was lucky enough to get this one cuz it was already established. They're pretty much like penis plants, once they're big enough, they grow pretty fast. I have a lot of single columns and they're pretty slow. Here's how it was when I got Jan 2014
mutant Posted June 29, 2015 wow did you get this locally? this might not even be melted wax as this is a us clone....
Philocacti Posted July 4, 2015 Yup, I found it neglect under a huge cereus in a nursery that not specialized in cacti. Can you elaborate on "not a melted wax"?
ohcactusisgood Posted July 4, 2015 I had penis envy up until a few weeks ago. I finally got mine in, had to travel to the US to get it. So happy to have one now. But there are so many types and they're all different!
hostilis Posted July 11, 2015 (edited) I thought I would add some to this thread since I took pictures recently. Here are three clones of TBMC. They all came from one plant. One is on a big stock, one on a small stock, and one on it's own roots. They all look quite different. This demonstrates how different growth patterns can come from different conditions. Then here is a big melted wax. Edited July 11, 2015 by hostilis
mutant Posted August 14, 2015 (edited) Philo> "melted wax" semi-monstrosa is a named clone deriving from US I think, erect, columnar and monster, sometimes terminates and does interesting shit. Reason I said yours doesn't look so much like it is that your seems to terminate more / show wilder monster traits.. Your specimen kind of looks like something between a clone-A penis TBM and "melted wax semimonstrosa" or it could be its something like a melted wax but growth was stunt for years due to clay pot and neglect.. I would like love to see how it evolves after you repot it a nice largish pot. here are my 4 initial TBCM's , one's freshly repotted and recentered... Have you noticed TBMCs have less of a up-down orientation compared to other crests/monsters? The phenotype it self sometime forcesd the plant to make pups that decicively go downwards here's the first specimen I propagated through rooting. It rooted pretty fast, cutting was off a graft though (I have noted that cuttings off grafts root faster , statistically, compared to those coming from own root specimens) and here are 4 so far penises coming from TBMCs ... The fat one is areole-less Edited August 14, 2015 by mutant
Philocacti Posted September 21, 2015 Stumbled upon this pic online of a monstrose bridgesii flowering. First time I see it. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/155208/

tipz Posted September 22, 2015 Does anyone know if there's a non-monstrose bridgesii crest? http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=33835&hl=bridgessi#entry394101 I sold this non monstrose Bridgessi crest to a West oz collector

Philocacti Posted September 22, 2015 Thanks a lot tipz, You sold it or sold a cutting of it? I think it's pretty rare (compared to the tbm crests)
tipz Posted September 24, 2015 Thanks a lot tipz, You sold it or sold a cutting of it? I think it's pretty rare (compared to the tbm crests) I sold it to a WA member who has not been active for a while. He does not seem to have been active here for quite some time... shortly after the trade actually. I have tried to get back in touch to try and get back some of the genetics but have had no luck. I kept a cutting and sold the whole crest to him as I really needed funds at the time and unfortunately my cutting did not make it through. So in my collection I have the long form ( euro clone ) and what seem to be two variants of the TBM - fat and choady and then the norm that seems quite prevalent. It was definitely a rarity ! sagiXsagi Posted December 23, 2015 (edited) nice new cresty growth from my TBCMs . they are of the 'melty type'. It seems penises are overall better cut off. The ratio of cresty to melty and penis growth seems to vary greatly. Philocacti your grafted TBCM is by far the most beautiful specimen I have ever seen. Amazing spines. Your sun does miracles mate! sagiXsagi Posted December 23, 2015 (edited) writing about them had me go to the roof to take more shots and eventually decided to take advantage of the cool dry winter time we're having at the area and cut some penises off a general view of my 4 mother tbmc shots of my pretiest and most decent shaped - these things grow in very strange ways two others, note at the right one the penis that grows horizontally, it actually grows onto the other segment and then changes growing direction almost 180 degrees! see cutting in next pics graft on bridgesii, example of how penises stunt the crest growth (removed) penises and crests cuttings rooted. today cuttings I am almost certain that these dicks will result into a form different from the typical short TBM. The penis formation seems different, and areoles are often in strangely high locations. two of the cuttings have a small part of crest body with a couple areoles. two others appear to be without areoles. melted wax semimonstrosa my biggest TBM (short form). note the roots developed in the right picture. I wonder if its because of the tendency to root so easily and in multiple points per pot, if we are talking about and older specimen, that it hesitates to flower. I dont know if the flowring thing is true for melted wax columnar too. But in a strange way it makes some sense to me. Indeed bridgesii in general easily make aerial roots (as seen in abandonded cuttings) Edited December 23, 2015 by sagiXsagi

☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted August 3, 2016 Do all melted wax and cockie(penis) bridggies crest? ... , and how likely is it to occur roughly?... (both with and without favourable cresting or monstruosing conditions , whatever they may be and if there happens to be such a thing) I guess with the sexy smooth skin it's a far more forgivable thing than when a pach (or peruvi probably) does it? ; for that matter... Is my italian bridgesii crest a crested melted wax or penis? - i think i might know/can guess since the same dude was selling some huge ones with willys for antennae/periscopes ...and, and...:- Does that mean they all have the power to crest if they have the power to monstruose-ify? , Or is it an extra ingredient/power/capability/disease (on top of the "monstruosing ingredient" -[whatever they may be}? Are there any other tricho species' crests that display a lot of non-spined "cock-skin" like we love bridgesii funkoids for?
sagiXsagi Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) I see you still havent learnt how to take a decent shot I am not sure what yr blabbering about, but check out "reverting" as a botanical term bridgesii crests (at least the type I have) revert / pup penises from time to time. They should be cut off, people say. I have been rooting several of them to see if the reverts might actually be one of the 3, supposedly clones of penises. I think they're are slower and thinner in growth, but maybe its still soon. Penises are not supposed to revert back so they stay penis In any case bridgesiis are more sensitive to overwatering and black rot than other tricho species and also less cold tolerant. Same goes with crests.. and yr italian crest is a crest not a penis. but it will pup penises eventually... Edited August 3, 2016 by sagiXsagi

Change Posted October 30, 2016 On 3/29/2015 at 6:25 AM, mutant said: 2) what happens if you root a penis cutting with no areoles? I doubt type B TBM would do anything interesting, but I havent tried this out.. what I got is both a couple penises from melty crest mothers and a large areole-less cutting of the same clone for rooting. About a year ago i grafted the top of a TMB with no areoles to see if anything weird would happen, it took, but has not grown since. This season i plan to start external application of cytokinin to see if that will trigger anything, if not i might consider injections. With regards to semi monstrose wax melted bridgesii, im wondering if there is a pattern as to what time of the year / season they start to melt. Mine was growing normal for most of last season, but this spring has started to get its melt back. Has anyone else noticed melting starts in spring or has it been observed to start at all times of the year?
