hostilis Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) He didn't buy that on ebay. Magical9 isn't stupid. I'm pretty sure he's actually making a joke about that listing. It was pretty funny if you ask me. Haha. Kind of like the "SUPER RARE Mickey Mouse shaped opuntia RARE CACTUS BUY BUY BUY!" $75 Edited July 22, 2014 by hostilis
Evil Genius Posted July 22, 2014 Yeah, don´t think any of the Altman Plants are that rare. Magical9, you have some Plants on your list that are a lot harder to get.
someone Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) Good to hear. I hate sellers who taint our hobby with their greed and try to rip us off. I got burned a few times when I was starting out so now I try to do what I can to help others get their hard earned monies worth. Really looking forward to seeing you garden update a year from now. No doubt you are on your way to having a magnificient yard. I envy all you guys with yards but one day I will have one of my own. Wow if it is a joke it is a Hell of a good one. Way to make me feel stupid Edited July 22, 2014 by someone

magical9 Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) So im trying to figure out what im doing wrong here. These plants pictured are in 4x4 and 5x5 pots or 2 gallon pots. they all seem to etiolate. they are in filtered sun light along with other plants that are growing really well and not etiolating but they are in 5+ gallon pots. Is it simply that they are in small pots even though they are not root bound yet? Or am i not watering enough? not enough direct light? I water at least once a week or when they are dry whatever comes first. They get filtered sun from 11am - 5pm. Edited July 23, 2014 by magical9
dionysus Posted July 23, 2014 I've had some cuts act similarly for no real reason, i put it down to sudden environment change. most (all i think) have come good for me after a growing season or 2. a little direct light couldn't hurt if available though...- dio
2XB Posted July 23, 2014 i dont think they are etoliated so much... these plants have just been put into a new environment and are growing differently right?? you cant cut an arm off a plant and expect it to keep the same girth after it has been sitting around for months trying to grow roots etc. those plants with flowers say to me they were taken from a reasonably mature plant... once they establish and grow some pups i am sure they will have consistent growth. dont think you can expect that when removing and placing a cactus in a a new environment. even nice straight trichos you can see where the growing season has started and stopped. Dont worry!
OPP Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) Pretty sure I read in Trouts notes that etiolation occurs from lack of sunlight/not enough sunlight. Another source says "The CactiGuide.com glossary of terms defines etiolation as "Pale, sickly, excessive growth caused by insufficient light, incorrect feeding, or overcrowding."" DiscoStu Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) if a cutting is from an in ground plant and goes into a pot it'll etiolate, simply due to the fact that potted plants grow thinner than ones in the ground, plants not in full sun will grow thinner than plants in full sun, plants indoors will grow thinner than plants outside, just the way trichs grow edit: i got a cutting from what i assume was an open ground plant and put in a medium large pot (~30L maybe?) and it etiolated and was in full oz sun all summer, it went thin simply because it went from the ground into a pot Edited July 23, 2014 by bot6
magical9 Posted July 23, 2014 Thanks for all the feedback! i dont think they are etoliated so much... these plants have just been put into a new environment and are growing differently right?? you cant cut an arm off a plant and expect it to keep the same girth after it has been sitting around for months trying to grow roots etc. those plants with flowers say to me they were taken from a reasonably mature plant... once they establish and grow some pups i am sure they will have consistent growth. dont think you can expect that when removing and placing a cactus in a a new environment. even nice straight trichos you can see where the growing season has started and stopped. Dont worry! Sweet if a cutting is from an in ground plant and goes into a pot it'll etiolate, simply due to the fact that potted plants grow thinner than ones in the ground, plants not in full sun will grow thinner than plants in full sun, plants indoors will grow thinner than plants outside, just the way trichs grow edit: i got a cutting from what i assume was an open ground plant and put in a medium large pot (~30L maybe?) and it etiolated and was in full oz sun all summer, it went thin simply because it went from the ground into a pot point. So i had planned on trying to up pot most of my 4x4/5x5 pots to 2gallon and all my 2gallons to 5gallons. But at this point would that do much good or could i get away with waiting a season or two before up potting them? I do plan on up potting the juuls giants in the 2gallon pots to 5gallon. magical9 Posted November 17, 2014 things were lookin good for a while. ill have to upload some pics. there were a series of rainstorms timed very well with my own waterings and my neighbor watering their grass that caused 4 or 5 plants to rot out. sucked but most of them had small pups that i managed to cut off and graft to some PC stock for now. Most of the in ground is looking good though. Its been getting into the 50's at night and im still seeing new growth heh. I grafted a Blue Peruvianus that has grown another almost 2" since grafting. Also a BBG pup to a PC stock. This grafting thing is amazing. Im working on my first seedling + pere graft now. Im considering growing seedlings year round under really nice LED light. Ill try to get some pics up
magical9 Posted March 3, 2015 (edited) Here are some updated pics and some phalaris AQ1 grass. The two in the fabric pots are 2 of my 3 colossus cuttings from zelly. ;) Edited March 3, 2015 by magical9
magical9 Posted March 3, 2015 my biggest issue was that the nieghbor had a broken sprinkler up until like a month ago when i finally asked them to verify the integrity of their sprinkler system. sigh. should have said something earlier. Lost some but the ones that survived can clearly take a LOT of water so now that the issue is fixed... i should have no more wet issues. Hopefully all the weak looking pup growth will kick in gear this year along with some fertz.
