Zonad
Went for a stroll this morning. Saw 1 cube and about 10 fresh cyans. Not like the last couple of weeks. Do cubes and Cyans grow seasonally In SEQ or do you just have to go out after a bucket load of rain? and then wait for it to rain again? Also do we gets subs or any other psychedelic mushrooms throughout the year. I have googled this stuff but get mixed responses and would like to hear from the group. -RC-
In a nutshell, yes, they are seasonal as soil temps are a big factor for fruiting. Rain is essential as mushrooms can be around 90% water. Subs can be found in QLD. Have a flick back through this thread for some photos and times of year, etc.

Pedro99
Finished work early cos of the rain, went for a gander and found one straight away. Then looked for another 15 and found nothing. Then I got busted (but it was OK cos I'd consulted with the landowner earlier, he just didn't recognise me )

Fantastic fungi is screening in 2 cinemas and was thinking it would be cool to do a small meet up before or after? https://fantasticfungi.com/3-26-screenings/#queenslandaus
Pedro99
Is it too wet to try tmw morning? Do they still pop up while it's wet? Gonna try and get out before sunrise either tmw or next few days. Wet>dry for a few days seems to be a good pattern, but do they disintegrate if it's wet again or do they keep pushing up? Thanks Edited February 25, 2020 by Pedro99
-RC-
Usually the active mushrooms of SE QLD will wait a few days after rain to flush, but it is all dependent on their exposure and how much actually falls around them. Imo the best weather for mushroom foraging is when the humidity is pretty much 100% (i.e. light misting rain with occasional showers). They will continue to pop when it is wet or dry; it just depends on the saturation of the spot. The main thing to consider is that most actives, particularly cubes, will present different when they are very wet, so ID may be a bit tricky at times if you are new to it. Get out there if you can! 1

I've been following the work that's being done with psychedelics as a treatment for mental health and I think it's really very important work. Im looking at different ways to get involved. Just landed in Oz on a working holiday visa not to long ago and I'm in the Brisbane area. Looking to make some friends with like minded people Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum and would be in for the meetup for fantastic fung

-RC-
Good grief!! If you have the chance you need to get out there tomorrow. This afternoon was that dream scenario; cubes as far as the eye can see... Sure to be more out on the morrow. Good luck!!
Pedro99
Awesome! I spotted a bunch but for whatever reason, I never find them in low lying areas, always on slopes and usually more to the top of them. It must be the spot I go to, there's been thousands of pans down where it's real soggy but never a single cube in such a large area until I walk up the hill (which is quite small so I don't find a huge amount).
-RC-
It may be the cows there avoid the low lying land. Maybe a bit soggy/snakey, and there might be better grass elsewhere? Are there trees on the slopes that offer any shade? I am beginning to believe there are certain species of grass that foster better mycelial growth and hence fruiting? Any thoughts?
Spok
Great day for a ride ! I went out after a hot cuppa and ran into 4 other likeminded nature lovers which was cool . Normally I would ride through the paddocks hunting but because I was in such a good mood thanks to that cuppa ( and passed a 3 mtr python cross the track ) I decided to ride out to one of the local dams and back . On the way back I was chased by a big thunder head and of course boom ! One then two then 3 so I stuffed my pockets for a sunny day good fun indeed . PS please be aware of the snakes out I have had one 3 mtr python and even a goanna out sunning himself and the guys I saw didn’t have long pants or even long socks from what I remember today. PPS thunderheads add to hunting and think I can see where a lot of the mythology comes from

-RC-
Today and yesterday were peak season days; just fucking everywhere. Good opportunity to try and get some morphological markers for the cubensis and subcubensis, which apparently are identical apart from spores. I reckon they can be picked apart from each other; just gotta get the microscope out I guess? Anyone got any knowledge on cubensis vs subcubensis? There were quite a few trees down in the lowest soggy regions so, at least for that area, you need to get a little higher. I did that today and went through a fence nearby and was shocked to find them everywhere. They certainly seem to love the shade, and the combination of high shade (trees) and low shade (grass). Great point about grass types I might get some pics of common paddock grasses ready for next time so I can identify them and see if there's a pattern. Very interesting!
Pedro99
If people uploaded more wild find pics it would help to check if there are favorable grasses too!
