Trichocereus Bridgesii Monstrose Clone Types

Recommended Posts

I went to another local nursery today and was surprised by the amount freaks they sold, had a bunch of grafted crests and variegated columnars as well as some massive TBMs... I searched around online to try and find some answers but everything seems pretty confusing and people seem to mix A and B up. I was told A is the long type and B is the short multiple branching TBM, correct me if I'm wrong.

My question is this, does a TBM 'obese' version exist or are they just selling very fat clone B pups as this? They were larger than any I have ever seen personally, small football sized almost....

I held off on picking one up since I was a bit suspicious and they were a bit pricey, I wish I had snagged a picture. Going back next week to see some larger cacti they get in Monday so I'll take some pictures then.

I did happen to snag a nice sized TBM clone B for $5 that had 5 segments just because a couple of blemishes :)

There were also 2 massive TBMs (clone A I think?) for $100 each that had between 3-5 large segments, I thought they were well worth it for the size but didn't have $ so I'll get a picture of those too and see what type everyone thinks they are.

In the states A is long jointed and B short jointed. Elsewhere it is the opposite. To further confuse things Sacred Succulents( the original nursery to claim to have started the A-B naming) also has a clone C

I've seen two distinct forms of the short jointed variety. And yes one is a very large form.

is "clone c" just a marketing thing because that looks like a normal bridgesii to me. if not i have a backyard filled with "clone c" bridgesii, i must be sitting on a small fortune

To me a Type C (I was convinced after a lot of reading that they're not clones, just types of different TBM) is a "Melted Wax" that doesn't revert to normal.

These aren't great examples, but in my opinion this would be a 'Melted Wax' (which isn't TBM)

post-12907-0-92351500-1395465386_thumb.j

and this would be a Type C TBM

This isn't fact, it's just how I like to think of them to make things easier on my head.

Also, with the Type B (short-jointed) there are ones which grow around 4-6 inches before pupping again and others which grow up to 9 inches before pupping. Then obviously depending on who grew them and what conditions they've been in they vary from Fat Mumma's (~2 inches in diameter) to the normal/small ones (in my eyes - which are around 3cm in diameter).

The Type A (long-jointed) are easy to tell from the Type B, because they're literally like a giant's penis, hardly have spines and when elongated to the max they are still bigger than normal Type B's.

This is a photo of elongated Type A which where pups from a mother plant and were around 4-5 inches in diameter.

post-12907-0-62775900-1395465605_thumb.j

The top part was elongated and around 3-4cm's!

Again, this is what I have gathered from trying to understand TBM's, pls correct me if I'm wrong!

I always called the crested monstrose bridgesii clone c, the long jointed clone A, and the segmented clone b. Then the melted wax i consider to be a semi monstrose bridgesii melted wax clone. Then I just call the other semi monstrose clones (non melted wax) simply semi monstrose bridgesii. Unless it's a specific clone like "lotusland" ect ect...

Oh boy, figures the US would have opposite clone letters...

I still don't know what to call my bridgesii that shifts between 3 and 4 ribs and grows in a spiral.

Hopefully have some pictures tomorrow :)

Good information everyone!

Hehe. Probably just a semi monstrose bridgesii. that's what i'd call it. Or you can call it the curved penis plant. lol.

Sabry. To me melted wax is a tbm since it's a Trichocereus bridgesii monstrose ;)

as i've said before, take most of the potted melted wax tbm forms, plant them In the ground, and watch them grow to their true, non monstrous form.

tbms grow monstrous simple because they dont like being in pots, hell most cacti remain stunted when grown in pots

i'm with bot6, clone c is a marketing thing. heck I have a clone D, it remains true to form even in the ground.

but hell yes OP, post up pics of these plants (& takes lots of cash money with you)

You're saying that a clone A or B TBM will revert back to normal in the ground? I've seen quite a few pictures of in ground TBM's that look monstrose still.

So I ended up getting one of the two supposed Clone A, I may go back and get the other if I can scrounge a little more $ together ;)

Here's a picture of the two:

Here's a shot of the 'obese' TBMs they had, I guess I had a case of fisherman's tale because they weren't as big as I remember but just very fat TBM clone B now that I went back and had a look..

Here's a Bridgesii cv Lotusland iirc, I believe I got em from mutant so maybe he can chime in here.

Same one, just with some crested bridgesii (not even going to call it a clone letter..)

And a couple pics of the 4 ribbed that occasionally goes 3 and grows in a spiral

Ended up meeting the owner of the nursery and was offered a part time job unloading cacti, win! Hopefully I will be able to score some new stuff Monday when that happens :)

And a couple shots I grabbed randomly..

Bullshit tbms will revert to normal when planted in the ground. I've had some in the ground at dads for ten years they still have the same growth habit.

Love the pics, very jealous!

I would LOVE one of the clone A! I've got plenty of clone B and melted wax but one day I'll get my hands on a clone A. :)
