New Garden - In Ground Cacti

Recommended Posts

Not really 'my' garden yet, but it's the yard at my parent's house. I recently shared my cacti collecting obsession with my father who let me put a bunch of my trichos in the yard. I am very excited to see how these turn out a few years from now! Most of them get pretty solid direct sunlight although the weather is usually overcast, I hope they grow nice and fat!

I am also excited to have gotten my father interested in collecting cacti and he now wants to know as much as possible about each kind and is very enthusiastic. I have put down some decent genetics so far (SS02, TPC, TPMs, Juul's Giant, a TPMxSS02 cutting from my main potted plant, a couple SS02 X Peruvianus) and am always on the look out for new things. I have a decent number of cacti still in pots but here are a few pictures of the ones I have in ground so far.

Here's a bunch I put down on the side of the house, I think I may have put them down a bit close together so may correct this later.

Looking good. Wish I had someone locally interested in trich's, let alone a family member.

Sounds like a recipe for the collection to get out of hand fast, in a good way haha.

a few pointers: work the soil around the plants, spade it up etc, then sprinkle some time release ferts all around the plants, then water it it. As your plants grow & mature, you'll want to feed them, and the best way is to work the soil around them.

I try to maintain a weed & grass free cacti patch because once the plants begin to fill out & fill in, getting rid of the weeds & grass becomes more & more difficult.

Or nearly impossible! I completely gave up on keeping weeds and grass out. The Bermuda grass alone would be a full time job!

There's no home owner's association here but the city will cite for weeds if you have a rock or gravel yard, but not with grass.
So.... I decided to just plant the cacti in the yard with enough space to mow and trim around them! Have just begun...

I actually won an award from the local water district when I tore out my grass & went with all cacti. For awhile I even commandeered the city easement, between the sidewalk & curb, and filled it with cacti. After a few years it was so overgrown with cacti I scaled that area way back to nothing except California Poppies. One of the first things I did when setting up my cacti garden was put in a drain field piped directly from the washing machine and the only time i surface water is to wash in ferts.

Thanks for all the awesome feedback and tips! I'll tell my dad to get on the weeding! :)

Here are a few more photos I found that are pretty good.

A far away shot of a group from the backyard, these don't have the best direct sunlight because they are under some trees but hopefully they'll still get nice and fat :D

Definitely one of my favorites! The guy I got them from had a great environment for cacti, somewhere in Arizona, all the cuttings I got were super blue. Here are the 3 I bought when I first received them. From left to right, SS02, PeruXBridg, Bridgesii

Zelly-

What kind of laundry soap do you use? Do you use bleach? I've been thinking of piping my laundry machine into the garden also.

What kind of laundry soap do you use? Do you use bleach?

The cheap biodegradable soap from Costco & biodegradable Simple Green.

The drain field consists of roughly 150' of 2" black ABS pipe with bunches of holes drilled in the sides & bottom. Buried 16-18" deep. Complete loop around the garden plus 2 lateral runs front to back.

i dont understand... you feed your cactus with soapy washing machine water??

No, I feed my cacti with surface applied time release bloom ferts, usually 15-30-15, and water it in with the garden hose. Applied once yearly, usually in Feb.

Since my soil is hard pan clay, i usually loosen or break it up with a hoe or whatever between the plants, toss the ferts out, then spray with the garden hose. The water will quickly pool on the clay, so I spray just enough to get it wet, let it soak in then hit it again. 3-4-5-6 days later, the ferts are all washed in.

You tell me, pics dont lie. I've color coded 4 plants since the camera POV is slightly different in each pic.

I just got back from visiting the cacti back home and I can't believe the changes since last time!! All have grown after coming out of dormancy, some more than others because of size of cuttings and genetics but the biggest difference is the addition of basal pups to a few of these :)

My dad went and got some oyster shells to use as mulch and prevent weeds, they look okay and seem to work except I noticed a gash on a cactus that was obviously from a shell hitting it, probably a cat's fault...

And, some pictures.

My dad's Bridgesii crest is finally putting out some new growth, looks like it put out a normal pup so will have to see what it ends up doing.

post-13244-0-45570200-1396145472_thumb.j

I realized I called these SS02 x Peruvianus in the OP but realized I had them mislabeled, they are the reverse. So, the biggest Peruvianus x SS02 put on some gnarly spines as well as shooting out 2 basal pups, can't wait till these are bigger and it evens out the cactus :) The other similar size peru x SS02 has put on similar growth but was planted a bit after so hopefully next time it'll look like this one!

Melted Wax Bridgesii doing great also, this is the one that had the gash but it's already scarred up and this one is shooting out basal pups too! I have 2 more of these in pots and no pups, going to have to get them in ground after seeing the vast improvement.

Got this TBM planted next to a bridgesii and a Peruvianus X SS02, If I learned anything from putting all these cacti in the ground it's that bigger cuttings grow faster and smaller ones take forever to get going... which should be common sense I guess.

post-13244-0-62258400-1400009041_thumb.j

The top of the pachanoi crest has started growing, previously it was only growing from the right side.

I brought down my Terrence mother plant and the TBM clone-A to put in the ground, the Terrence will go in full sun once my pops get the area ready for it. I did manage to get the TBM planted in a nice sunny spot though.

Not sure what benefits it provides yet, but I think it helps reflect some sunlight back upwards so might help with growth. They are really sharp so it's regularly checked to make sure nothing is growing into them and potentially slicing itself open.
