T. Pachanoi - Lowes - Thoughts?

Question

So i was at lowes and saw this T. Pachanoi with longer spines than what ive seen on PC pedro and the new spines are black/dark colored. They also had a San Pedro with regular short spines and then 3 inch spines... is that normal? Maybe a cross? (i didnt buy that one though) I decided to grab the one that had longer and dark spines. What do you guys think? is it just a standard PC clone or maybe some sort of cross or something special?

I've seen these referred to as "short spined peruvianus", though it's probably more closely related to the 'true' pachanoi than to other peruvianus. It's a spectrum, and I don't think you can get a definitive answer, but it's definitely got some differences that distinguish it from things like "yowie".

It's definitely not PC.

Definately not a PC, and not the specific clone that is regarded at the "short spined T. peruvianus," which is really just a particular and somewhat distict T. pachanoi (I've discussed that a length multiple times in the past). Your plant doesn't look at all outside the range of T. pachanoi, but that doesn't exclude it having a mixed parentage.

The plant in those pictures immediately above bear a great deal of similarity to the monstrose form of the short spined T. peruvianus, long spines and all. They clearly need more sun though.

Looks like there's a couple monstrose ones there. Picture #3 in post #5. Beautiful plants! I wouldn't have suspected lowes to carry non pc trichocereus pachanoi! It makes sense that they would have a better variety in your area though.

Interesting how the potting soil has shrunk back from the rim of the pot as well as the columns.

And dont some of the columns look brownish below the soil line where the potting soil has shrunk back? Gotta wonder about the overall health of the roots etc, or if they're fully rooted.

but yeah, run back there & buy them all, and ask Lowes who their cacti wholesale vendor is.....

There should be a tag on the pot with a website you can go to. They usually are wholesale dealers. You should DEFINITELY check them out! I would love to get ahold of some of those.

Lowe's gets supplied by Altman Plants for cacti and succulents. They are very hit and miss for Tricho's tho other than grandiflorus hybrids.

And Altman's labeling sucks I'm sure they're all just listed as San Pedro-Trichocereus pachanoi

i believe you are correct. All i saw was "San Pedro" and Trichocereus Grandiflorus. That would make sense about the altman supplier.

Im going back today to possibly buy that monstrose ;)

alright my tax return was burning a hole in my pocket so...went back to lowes and got 2 of those cacti. One of which is the monstrose/long spined. The other looked to be legit T. Pachanoi as well so i grabbed it.

i've seen ppl in threads boast about finding some nice stuff at wally's in california or maybe was altmans

best i've seen around here so far is a really phat Pachycereus Pringlei...

last year at lowes I found a 6 pack of large mammillarias and Barrell Cactus for like 7 bux, but i left them outside

Nope she crawls around these guys all the time just fine. Tho she does prefer the long spined cacti more, less of a hassle I guess

I believe the spines would hurt your snake

probably digs the spines when its time to shed her skin.
