This little Trichocereus scopulicola x Trichocereus terscheckii is quickly becoming one of my favorites. It is still very young yet and to be honest, I've neglected this one... still once I found her growing I had to water immediately and post.5aef8c52a5ba0_scopulicolaxterscheckii15-10.thumb.jpg.0899922e4f99be11086cd6b118f253fa.jpg

How many ribs does the plant have? Looks like 8.

The plant is very fat compared to its height. The skin texture looks unique too.

The plants i grow from this cross have all 5-6 ribs. Awesome plant. Best luck  pollinating this jewel.

I know I'm necroing an old thread and whatnot but I just have to say holy titty sprinkles.  I didn't even know cacti could come as yellow as you put in that post until just now.  I thought it was a freak thing with patches or stripes here and there but those are straight up yellow like a pissed off banana.  They are truly one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen so even though I'm really late to the party I just want to say thank you for sharing the pictures of them.

I don't suppose I could peer pressure you into uploading a more recent pic or two of them though? I'm keen as mustard to see how they're looking these days though if they've gone back to green just tell me they died or something because like meeting your hero I don't want the dream shattered lol

Woow such great cacti, I love them! I have a bunch but they are still seedlings and I am first tackling the high evaporation rate in my apartment where I grow..

Say, which parents have a very high tendency to produce mutants? How does that work? (Apart from TPM)

Could you tell me a little about VRG, and what about Bertha, Oscar, Olivia, hmm what else.. Cause I have an Olivia cross and I am not seeing any mutants afaik.. is it a particular interaction between two varieties mostly? And the mother contributes a little more by epigenetics?

To be clear: these are incredible plants even when they are not mutants, but I have a fascination for weirdlings and the complexities of breeding plants and fungi.

Also, I am a big scop lover, but I don't seem to be the only one! xD

[ So much to learn from this amazing and famous cactus community :D ]

I practically started over again

All of my outdoor cacti poofed one year

I had a house full of Zelly Crosses tho

I think close to half those pots in the hoop house contain Zelly hybrids

Seedlings galore too

The seedlings to the left were the most

neglected, obviously

Close up Lumberjack x Juuls

Beautiful prickly's too

VRG started out as a big clump of red flowering grandiflorus with 2-3 stems only slightly variegated

vrgBudsDSC_0655.thumb.jpg.5a9874f3bbb3ff4fb2d577fd4de6c271.jpg

however when crossed with other trichs a full range of variegation can be seen.....

such as mis-val (validus) x vrg

variValidusxVRGDSC_0693.thumb.jpg.9789fa860ccad060921e578843e956fe.jpg

to near 100% variegation

scop x vrg aka Zelly

variZellyDSC_0692.thumb.jpg.cf5dfbe70ceb4d20bbbc0afbc0325be2.jpgvariZellyDSC_0694.thumb.jpg.8703242914a07dd9431197488952030d.jpg

Oscar consists of 4-5 stems of seed grown plants that can exhibit monstrous / crested genetics.  Pics are all oscar mother plants, one of the completely spineless stems flowered this yr

oscar_trichyard2DSC_0283.thumb.jpg.c845d09a9e327f98bdb5dc6e6764aaab.jpgoscarDSC_0577.thumb.jpg.e2f931066f3578c91a6c3a8a03d1dd3a.jpgoscarDSC_0580.thumb.jpg.5e8864acb956bc484ecfde448ae92ad6.jpg

Olivia consists of a single stem with a  few branches and doesn't exhibit any monstrous genetics

oliviaDSCN1447.thumb.jpg.5f5df06c9a3bf92e14367513355f1f96.jpg

Bertha is very similar in growth & looks to LumberJack although crosses both ways have been made...

berthatrichyard2DSC_0325.thumb.jpg.adb05c4da6ab3c64361c8045f61d64e4.jpgberthaFLRDSC_0692.thumb.jpg.329d4f0f4c485badd08583fbc92261c9.jpg

Imo certain hybrids when crossed with other hybrids or clones tend to occasionally produce variegated seedlings...

for example the SS02xSS01 plant when crossed with LumberJack or Bertha or Icaros or (insert name) sometimes produces variegated seedlings.

Thanks very much for the elaborate answer. :)

It makes sense to me what you're saying and I heard 'rumored'.. I guess certain crosses just have a higher chance of having recessive genetics pop up or have a mutation on the alleles of both parents, disabling certain genes like those for pigments?

I'm enjoying both the typicals and the mutants of your crosses. :D And I like the "Make your own Zelly" sentiment haha.

Out of a previous sowing of 4 crosses I only had one crested Olivia x Clyde but I'll certainly take it.

Something else I've heard is crosses of species or hybrids much less alike within the Trich complex can produce more weirdness. The variegation I've seen and am seeing from certain Echinopsis cv. "Orange California" crosses is pretty striking.

How crazy do you think naming these coming generations will become and what would be a good strategy to prevent overly long names? To give each especially striking and unique microspecies a nickname and just not care / or codify the names of the ones that stand out less? Will it basically be like weed cultivars have gone crazy? lol
