Meet up: Melbourne

Recommended Posts

Hey mate, there is a super plant meet happening on the 7th of december.

its happening the day after EGA because there will be so many out of towners, and its always fantastic to get together after the event.

we wont be holding it at the gardens though, not sure of the location as yet.

there will be updates as we get closer to the day.

To be honest i think paying 10 bucks to hang out with like-minded plantheads is pretty rubbish. It hasnt cost a dime so far.. so it seems like a step back to introduce a monetary aspect at this point.

And the melb bot gardens are ideal on many lelvels, the sticking point being that its the central most point for a geographically dispersed set of ppl to meet at (not to mention all the awesome that the bot gardens is..)

sounds great, I'd come along on either the 17th or 18th of jan too if we have a meet then. But if theres more energy for the weekend after I say go with that.

Great, looking forward to it (as much as a painfully shy awkward person can). 17th is fine (or 18th if it changes).

still hoping to make it but some last minute stuff has come up.

for those that do here's a couple of things from the gardens facebook feed that may be of interest.

from today(friday)

Flowering Friday this week is the striking Agave parryi or Mescal in the California Garden at Melbourne Gardens. Standing at an impressive 30 feet, this perennial succulent is monocarpic, which means that it flowers just once before setting seed and dying. Flowering usually occurs once the plant has a sizeable trunk which, in this case, has taken approximately 25 years. You’ll need to get in quick to see this one – the bloom is expected to only last for a few more days.

from monday

Nursery staff at Melbourne Gardens are keeping a close eye on this Amorphopallus titanum (Titan Arum) after a shoot appeared in late December. The shoot signals that either a leaf or a bloom is on the way and we should know within the next 6 - 8 weeks whether we have another big stinky flower on our hands
