A Liberal National government in Australia would adopt the opt-out UK approach to filtering the internet for all Australians.

The policy comes less than 41 hours before polls open for voting in the federal election where the Coalition is currently expected to win. It is also almost a year after the Labor government abandoned its plans for mandatory internet filtering, and three years after the Coalition announced that it would not support a policy for mandatory internet filtering.

The announcement, buried in an AU$10 million online safety policy published online today (PDF)announces that under a Tony Abbott government, Australians would have "adult content" filters installed on their phone services and fixed internet services unless they opt out.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you have to vote for one of the major parties. And at the very least, you can help keep the white nationalists out by putting them last, regardless of whether you think your first preference will make a difference or not.

And in the senate, in particular, there are always plenty of quirky parties and independents that can, at best, offer a voice to ideals that you hold, and at the very least can be a worthwhile protest vote. Even if you can't sway the outcome in your electorate, minor parties taking a large number of votes can help influence public policy of both the major parties in the future. For example, if you vote for the drug policy reform party, they are unlikely to get a seat, but if enough people vote for them, the major parties might take note that a significant number of voters could be brought on side by incorporating some of the policies into theirs.

I don't have any illusion that the system we have at the moment gives us much power, but it's the only power we have, and you might as well exercise it where you can.

i think it's a good idea, that those two subject matters (and snuff movies), ought to be censored out.

PH, its not so much 'filters' that cleaned up searches. Its mostly three things..

¤ Illegal sites got taken down

¤ My government finally stopped running pay sites with photoshop simulated child pornography to get perverts credit card numbers

¤ Search engines are now removing illegal search results

That last one is the only thing close to a filter but its their right (or legal responsibility) to filter their service

There are many people who never will opt in for porn despite wanting it, and others who will be paranoid about the government tracking their porn proclivities.

If an opt-out filter were set in place there would be a tidal wave of new users on places like TOR and Freenet where no filter or law reaches.

Ironically, the more a government tries to clean up society the dirtier it gets for those who get past the rules.

Politicians suddenly running out of hypocrisy isnt what will stop this thing, nor will a popular uprising, what will stop it is, as you said, porn is about half of the internet. Theyd have to block the entire internet and then whitelist sites on a case by case basis and constantly review them. It would cost a godawful fortune and the trouble would never end.
