acuminata branching out perhaps?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I came across this acacia today. I think it could be an acuminata narrow phylode variety. The width, length and colour of phylodes, rods instead of balls, bark,, I didn't cut anything, so wasn't able to obtain the jam smell. I have experienced that aroma and it is sooo good! Delicious ;) it should give seeds in a few months, that'll help i.d. better. If it is what I think then that is great news! As this is a fair way out of its recorded habitat!

The phyllodes look like some of my broad phyllode acuminatas. When mine flower the rods don't have such a long stem before the flowers begin though, the flowers go all the way to the branch they are growing on. So that seems a bit different. I wonder if it's a hybrid ?

I've never seen them growing wild though so I'm just going off how mine look.

A phyllode compared to something for scale would help.

I'm not sure that those are the narrow phyllode variety of Acacia Acuminata as the phyllodes are much narrower.

I then thought it could have been the regular variety of acuminata however the ends of the phyllodes of the tree you found aren't really that acuminate and are way more curvy than I remember the regular variety.

I'd wait for someone better equipped to be sure of an ID but my novice skills would tend to say it's not sorry.

Thanks for the replies :) I just did some measurements,, phyllode length up to approx 25cm and width at most 5mm. They are quite curved but are acuminate, maybe not heaps but they do taper to a point, and the hooks on their tips as I have read on many sites regarding ID also point me in the acuminata direction. The flowers average 25mm in length. Possibly a hybrid, or a well travelled bird ;) there is only a couple in the location I found them,, plus I am on the coast, an area apparently they don't grow!? It would be cool if it is a hybrid better suited for my location.

Hi Bushturkey, can u please let me know why its def not an acuminata? Its very close to the other varieties I have researched,, is it the flowers on a long stem or the extra long phyllodes?

cheers

Yeah, its a tough one hey. The phyllodes are only 1mm wider than info suggests, yet very long they are for sure. The trunk being one upright, is like the standard variety which grows closest to my location than the other varieties. The bark is like what has been described to me and also looks the same as the well matured standard variety....

as SallyD mentioned, the long stem between flower and branch is different. So that puts a tilt on it. It stands out amongst all the other acacia in the area. ID being phyllodes and flower, which, are slightly different to typical acuminata. I look forward to when it seeds.
