giant sunflower competition

After witnessing Changes entry quite recently (exclusive viewing :-) ) I think he has the most impressive SF bed to date. Can't wait for more people to post pics!

Edit; still mans are fucking huge tho! Nobody will top them no doubt in terms of size!

I think as far as maturity time its relative to breed/genetics. The Giants and mammoths grow for 12 weeks.. growth either in head size or height depending on phenotype. There are early flowering types as shot as 50 days. But like you say environment and conditions are going to play a big part. I really want these to go 4 metres, which isn't that big an ask from where they are at currently. It is storm season though so you never know a good strong wind would probably flatten the lot.

Well im not sure if it lives up to the hype but here it is.....

20131206_104435.jpg

The tallest are just over 6 foot at the moment

Most of my seed was from a flower i grew last year, its a shame to say but its going multiheaded like yours did gtarman,

I tried picking off some of the multiheads so they concentrate their energy on the top but i dont think thats going to help much

The rest were seed from Bunnings "Giant Sunflower" they only seam to be growing one head so fingers crossed for a biggen

Im going to need a few more years practice before i can pump them out like Stillman.... Nice work on your pumpkin aswell...... you have the greenest thumb of us all :)

But remember that Stillman has made a pact with the devil. His soul in return for prize-winning vegetables

DSCF2155_zpsb74009a5.jpg

17th of December. Some stopped growing and headed. 2 are still growing well. One looks like it might hit 4 metres. I dunno how I am going to save seeds from the birds. Not bad for a fist go, next year I will build a trellis I can walk on and go hard I think, with foliar sprays etc. I want the Australian record...lol

Nice one B)

It's so discouraging to think that the world record is over 8 metres lol...and held by a German flight attendant..? :scratchhead:

I'll have to bring in a scaffolding crew I think I lake the required skills...That's an awesome set up. What we need is some good genetics to start with.

It's gonna be in the low 40's here tomorrow - the sunflowers seems to absolutely love it so I've soaked them thoroughly and given them a fert ready for 3-4 days of blazing heat... I'll take pics tomorrow and get a measuring tape - one has headed completely, and the others are just about to open. I think they're at the 3'ish metre point now but haven't measured... They're all single headed and the head of the first one is the size of a dinner plate. (must remember pics!)

Nice change.

Anyone heard from or seen Stillman lately? He seems to have dropped off the radar. Now would be the perfect time to announce a giant plant contest and actually stand a chance of winning it lol. Hopefully he's ok and just otherwise occupied though, as happens with everyone on here from time to time
