The pounamu I bought from trademe. Unfortunately most of it is to prone to cracking and chipping to carve anything with much detail. Also the pieces were poorly slabbed by who ever slabbed them meaning a lot were cut across grain rather then with grain which doesnt give much size to work with and is the reason they are so chippy. The freeform pieces were basically just hit with a hammer then ground to shape till they stopped chipping and have strength.

You like the cobble stone? Or the yellow flower jade? The cobble was the top of the slab I cut the green kawakawa necklaces from. It is chatoyant and rather then wreck it trying to make pendants I decided to smooth it all and polish it up. Its pretty cool and I Figure oneday it might make a nice base, otherwise Ill just use it as a hot rock and fondle stone :)

the cobble stone is the one i liked, lol it has character.. of nature, probably didn't need polishing for me to like it tho, lol.

My internet is to slow for youtube so I havent been able to hear its sound. Found a few pictures though, one was made from jade. Id estimate the cost of it to be around $1500-2k, the size of presumably Guatemalan jadeite needed for the skull alone would be $1000+. I look forward to one day hearing its noise.

Different sounds depending on how and what they are made from, they can be a bit like fox whistles but they've got more of a hollywood classic screaming skull drone about them, or more of a hollow low dry breath rasp, just perfect tribal psychological warfare. I'm keen to make one for foxes for something a little different.

I really like your Pounamu Toki 3 photo teo, they look like old sailors paintings of ocean storms, you can stare into those pieces infinitely, the brown string is a little deeper, but they've both got distinctness.

Keen to see you peyote results, going to be a stunner.

So cool. I bought some vegetable ivory to carve, but then realized how freaking hard it was, and that I didn't have a carving device good enough to make a mark in it. I wanted to do it scrimshaw style and not with a Dremmel. then I saw how many different knives there were and how much they cost. So now I have 6$ worth of it which I wouldn't throw away but I'm not sure I'll ever get to carving it!

You can make knives from old tool steel and a wet grinder pretty easy.

You can grind it dry too, if you don't overheat it until it discolours too much. If you have some water to keep quenching it, it works fine.

As soon as it changes colour (past a straw colour) then you take all the hardness and temper out of it.
