Amazonian Posted June 3, 2013 OK...so I use my mini-ipad a lot and have some pretty neat apps installed on it. I am a fan of the art apps but there are a stack of useful apps that can be downloaded. There are many free apps, but a lot of the free versions are just a tease...they give you a sample, but to enjoy the full benefits of the app, you have to pay for the full version, doh. Anyway, i thought others could talk about some neat apps they are using. Its amazing how many apps there are. There is an app for just about everything, and its not really advertised, so some of us maybe missing out on something useful...so if you have a good app... tell us about it ?! There is this art app i am playing with . Its through itunes, Andriod have a version of this also, but i think it is better on an Apple device. I also have this app on my ipod, but the ipod is slow, so the app lags a lot. I really like this app when i am under the influence . Its called 'Kaleidoscope'. There is a free version, and a paid version. https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/kaleidoscope-drawing-pad/id525904070?mt=8 Here are a few screen shots of my doodling with the kaleidoscope app... Its very bright, but fun to play with... take my word for it. Its not the finished product that you are working for with this app, its all about flowing color over and over again and watching the pattern unfold. There is another trippy Apple app called 'Tesla Toy' and its like a heap of tiny tadpoles that gather around your finger when you touch the screen. Its a $1:99 app. https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/tesla-toy/id395767185?mt=8 There are a lot of camera apps to play around with such as 'CamWow' which is a free Apple app. This will give you a mirror like image and you can take pics of plant spirits, lol. https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/camwow-free-photo-booth-effects/id418368641?mt=8 I have weather apps, screen saver/wallpaper apps, meditation apps, jigsaw puzzle apps, map apps....There are so many apps and i will add to this thread as i come across interesting apps. Anyone else recommend anything ? PS. You can tell i am a bit of a fan of Apple apps... I have trouble with my Samsung phone and i dont know whether it is the phone or the andriod software?, but it doesn't matter... cause i have a groovy ipad that works a treat
ballzac Posted June 3, 2013 Shiprack This app has got to be one of my favourites. I order a lot of stuff online, and when there is tracking on something I am looking forward to receiving, I can become obsessive with refreshing the tracking page to see if it's "onboard with driver" that day. With shiprack, you just forward an email that has the item's tracking number in it, and it automatically adds it to your list of items with the subject line of the email as the title. If you don't have an email from the vendor, you can also add items manually. It works out what tracker to use based on the tracking number, and sends you notifications when the status of any of your items is updated. You can also click on one of your items to see the tracking history of that item.
bogfrog Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Wow Amz, that kaleidoscope one looks cool. I downloaded an app recently called 'Frax' which is fractal generating program. You can alter just about everything, the colour, the angle of the light source, the speed of movement and the texture. Not really constructive or tooo amazing, but very pretty and fun to play around with while you're on a bus or waiting in a que. I have been playing 4 pics 1 word too, and thats kinda cool. Good to get you thinking, i like to see how fast i can work them out, but i often get stuck after a while I hate that when free app's blast you with constant advertising! qualia Posted June 3, 2013 can anyone recommend a good flac player? i have an ipad that's acting as an expensive paper weight due to the fact i can't listen to decent tunes. that and reading on it is shit.
AndyAmine. Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) I used to be a typical anti-apple, pro android fanboy but after my HTC Desire stopped working I was given an iPhone 4.I think where the iPhone/iPad shines is that the operating system only has to run on a few different hardware platforms instead of hundreds. This means that software and hardware companies can invest a good ammount of time and money into their products knowing it will work on everyone's devices for a while to come. That equals better quality apps and accessories.I use the GarageBand, Amplitube, Line6 Mobile Pod and PocketAmp apps for my guitar as a portable guitar amp and effects pedal modeler, cost me about $100 all up and would cost me hundreds to buy the hardware versions.Sure you need to do a lot of tweaking and it can be a bit 'digital' sounding but there are plenty of great tones to be found.InsTuner is a great free instrument tuning app. Its way better than the digital tuner I bought for $30.Flipboard and Clipped and good for news as they collate all the stuff thats interesting to you and present it in an easy to read and digest format.ACS Journal (American Chemical Society)Petrescue app Woof, woof.AWLQ app. Animal Welfare League QLD. Arrff, Arrff...Biggest thing I miss about Android... SwiftKey.... Damn you apple and your locked down keyboard/OS, its such a double edged sword. simhanada Posted June 3, 2013 buying apps can add up so its worth keeping an eye out for itune card specials. There is often at least 20% off sales and rarely 50% off sales at dick smith/good guys/harvey norman/officeworks etc

Anodyne Posted June 3, 2013 can anyone recommend a good flac player? i have an ipad that's acting as an expensive paper weight due to the fact i can't listen to decent tunes. that and reading on it is shit. I think you should be able to get VLC running on an ipad? - don't know how it stacks up against other FLAC players, but it's free and can deal with other unusual file types too. Darklight Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Ohgodohgod I have *so* bonded with an old Galaxy I was gifted when a mate upgraded. I was really off the whole tablet thing, I'd re-gifted an iPad I was given because I try to run my stuff as open source as possible, and the iShit wouldn't talk to anything else in the house. I resent their monopoly too. The Galaxy talks to everything I have Got the Galaxy and had a play with it, got control of the guts again and will hopefully ditch CIQ later this week when I re-flash it ( hope it doesn't brick ) I tend to be a bit practical about the apps I use so I installed straightaway: Fires Near Me: so I know whether to worry if I see smoke in summer ( esp while travelling, thanks Road Trip past Flowerdale Feb 09 ) The NSW version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.gov.rfs.fnm.nsw The National and NZ version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.gov.rfs.fnm.national LiveTraffic NSW and the QLD one too so I can make sure the roads are clear during floods and fires and city f*n traffic runs: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.livetrafficnsw Weatherzone, I quite like the interface even tho I routinely use the BOM site: http://apps.weatherzone.com.au/weatherzone/ Ad Block for Android: https://adblockplus.org/en/android-install and a bunch of other security stuff including: Password Manager: KeePass, X platform https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.keepass&feature=search_result And of course my motorcycle manual, because she is a right bitch and it's easier to read in the dark when it's backlit, I can wordsearch it plus I can wipe the grease off afterwards Atlas of Living Australia- it always lacks the things I'm looking for and is clunky, but it's still cool and I hope will get cooler over time: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.org.ala.mobile.ozatlas&feature=search_result Cozy magnifier- it's pretty good but I'd love to know of something I better I can use as a microscope : on Google Play somewhere Pitchlab guitar tuner- because obvious. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.symbolic.pitchlab&hl=en Most of the links are via Google Play, I prefer to get my apps elsewhere if possible and have linked to google for your convenience Many of you will have more of a clue about all this than I do, happy to hear of other security recommendations Edited June 3, 2013 by Darklight
AndyAmine. Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Darklight, maybe hardware instead of software is better for your needs, a good start could by trying out some snap on lenses if you can find ones that fit on your tablet, or you could 'modify' one to fit. lol.I have a few cheapy lenses for my phone and they are a cracking piece of kit, I have macro, fisheye and one for distance, Im guessing there are 'microscope' ones too. you get a metallic ring to put around the camera lens and you just snap them on/off.Or you could make one yourself like this guy http://www.psfk.com/2013/05/diy-iphone-microscope.htmlThis is iPad/iPhone only but it looks sweet as:http://www.bodelin.com/proscope/proscope-micro-mobile:)(They are limited in operation and I dont like them as a company but I do like to have an apple device around the house now, just because there are some things that are only made for iPhone/iPad) Edited June 3, 2013 by AndyAmine. Amazonian Posted June 3, 2013 Wow Amz, that kaleidoscope one looks cool. I think you would dig the app bogerz. I have downloaded a guitar tuner app to see what key the Tibetan singing bowl i have is in, so its uses are not just for the guitar : ) Some interesting suggestions in this thread already...i will have to have a look at them, and of course Darklight has the most practical apps.

Xenodimensional Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Dig your Kaleidos Amazonian! I've been addicted to it for a while now (as is evidenced below). As for other apps... there's too many to list them all. Sky Safari, FL Studio Mobile, Chilluminati Radio and Navfree (a free half decent gps) are ones I use a fair bit. I like the utilitarian ones like Compasses, Spirit levels, apps for GeoCaching etc as well as esoteric stuff like ambient sound generators and things that record the sounds you make in your sleep.
