hostilis Posted October 13, 2013 I cannot for the life of me get my ariocarpus retusus grafted to a pereskiopsis to grow. I have no idea whatsup with it. It took and everything about 2 months ago and has just been sitting, Time to try some more grafts i suppose.
bogfrog Posted October 13, 2013 Hey dont give up on it hostilis.. Do more grafts also, but my largest ariocarpus on pere graft did the very same thing. If its still relatively turgid just keep it in humidity and water it. Mine took a good two months before it actually began to grow.
Hellonasty Posted October 14, 2013 Wow!! Those are two exceptional examples of A. Fissuratus, be sure to treat them well. Be sure to research their cultivation extensively they can be difficult especially when changing their environment. Enjoy these beauties HN
Hellonasty Posted October 14, 2013 As for fert, they don't require much at all, they are able to extract nutrients from the minerals in your soil mix. Be sure to use an almost completely inorganic soil mix, any fert is fine just use less than normal or if a liquid mix up 1/4 strength. HN
bogfrog Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) Thanks HN, i've been consulting some older and wiser growers than myself on their potting mixes and doing a bit of reading up i have come up with the following combo: - 1 part silty loam (collected from a local river, i wouldnt have been so bold but a local grower has been using it in his mixes for the last 20 years with great results) - 1 part limestone chip - 1 part fine grade pumice - 1 part coarse sand Hope it does the trick Edit: wow good things really do come in threes, a mate just gave me some more ariocarpus (He is building a nursery and just bought a bulk lot of plants) So I repotted the tribe into their new mineral mix, (which for some reason i dreamed about in kaleidoscopic patterns last night) and topped with quartz pebbles Family photo Front row: fissuratus, fissuratus Middle row from left (these plants in the small square pots i have had for a year or two) : retusus, retusus, fissuratus, agavoides, kotschoubeyanus Third row: 12y.o retusus, retusus var. furfuraceaus, agavoides, kotschoubeyanus elephantidens Fourth row: scapharostrus, trigonus var. elongatus Top of the triangle: frailea asteroides Edited October 14, 2013 by Ceres
IndianDreaming Posted October 14, 2013 Ceres: How fine is the pumice? I've looked around for it, but the stuff I see for sale is as fine as talc powder - is yours grainy or powdery?
bogfrog Posted October 14, 2013 Grainy is what you want, powdery would probably clog up the drainage
IndianDreaming Posted October 14, 2013 ^ Yes, that's what I thought... I haven't found a local supplier yet. The big Bun.. doesn't stock it here. I did find a importer of pumice from your neck of the woods: http://www.australianperlite.com/pumice/horticulture/ I'll see if I can find a local outlet. It's funny you mention dreaming about your plants, after I'd re-potted 60+ cacti I dreamt about them all night, it was the tops of them and the spines were unfolding with new growth - fun, but spikey! Carry on with the Ario's - mighty fine specimens you've procured there! They look a lot like the one you borrowed to draw - the Ario faeries are with you
hostilis Posted October 15, 2013 Thanks cereus. I took it out of the humidity a while back and it stayed plump so I figured it didn't need it. But good news! It looks like it's starting to swell up more and it's grown a tiny tiny bit. So I know it's fused. It's just a matter of patience now. Beautiful collection by the way. I am missing in my collection any adults. I would love to get a retusus or something soon though.
GoOnThen Posted October 19, 2013 These are my Astro's and Ario's Most of these are purchased plants and grafts other than the Ario on pere which is one of mine. Hopefully I am going to get some flowers this season. Cheers Got

Hellonasty Posted October 20, 2013 A few more shots from my collection Ariocarpus Retusus, These I started from seed about 5 years ago, grafted as a seedling and now de-grafted. The bottom plant was an offset from the larger plant. Astrophytum Myriostigma CV Onzuka (red form) Astrophytum (hybrid between Myiostigma and Ornatum) CV Fukuryu Some mixed plants that I have de-grafted and set to grow their own roots.
AZS Posted October 24, 2013 Here are a couple - I pollinated the Ariocarpus and am waiting to see if seeds develop. The Astrophytum pollination of 2 plants resulted in about 100 seeds.
