tell me about Oz

Recommended Posts

how difficult would it be for an American to move to Oz? I've been thinking about where I should point myself over the next few years (being of the nomadic type). Anybody feel like letting me interrogate them about the region? What's the cost of living like, how's the wilderness managed, etc...

Aus. is a beautiful place.

There are a few americans living in oz at the moment i think?, i know there are some at the EA boards.

on the note of immagration...with howards head floating in bush's excraments... i doub't you won't be allowed into oz. I know little about the immagration status, but oz an US seem to be "bonded" at the moment

on the brighter note...lovely place, lots of friendly faces :)

yeah great place, w/all kinds ov enviroments.

snowy mountains, tropical & temperate rainforests & the dry outback.

as to migrating- it is hard. unless you have a chatership, specialised skills not readily available here or an employer here who's willing to sponser you, forget it.

i had a friend w/an english degree in civil engineering who got nowhere 'cus the degree wasn't recognised here, yet another friend who did the extra 2 years to get a chartership in civil engineering got citizenship here in 2 months.

the easiest (though not strictly legal) way is to come over for a few months holiday & find an aussie girl to marry. this is not recommended.

Even easier than residency by marriage.. Residency by defacto. All you have to be is the partner of an aussie and prove that you are living together and you're in (it takes more than years and over au$2000) and is by far the "easiest".

You have to have lived together for a year to apply, which makes it hard as you'll need to find a partner on the day of you're arrival and start living with them. Then ask for a visa extension in order for you to live with her for over a year so that you can apply for the residency visa.

You can live with them overseas and it will still count as "having lived together for more than a year" so maybe find yourself an aussie partner in the US and start getting the months added.

Good Luck

ps. apart from the backwards looking, conservative, 1950's type government (similar to yours) it is a GREAT place. You'll most likely enjoy it fully.

Thanks for all the feedback and advice. I wish I could just hop on a plane! :) *sigh* unfortunately, I still have years and years of school left to do (that's what happens when you change majors several times, then quit for a bit, then go back and decide to major as Career Student...). Someday, however, I hope to at least visit for as long as I can (that's read: "Someday I hope to go there on vacation for some months and get lost in the bush, never to be heard from again!" Hey, we can all have our dreams, right?). Ok, I'm off to do some homework now, so please forcibly ignore me for the next couple hours if I poke my head back in here

cheers!

wyyrm,

For a temporary visit while still continuing

through your education, have a look into University

Exchange type programs.

Investigate some of the major universities here

in Australia.

Doing a google search with the following gives you a

start: 'university exchange overseas site:edu.au'

Or just click on this google link
