djmattz0r Posted May 21, 2014 That could be interesting, might just be able to wrap it all the way around the pot if using nylons since they are long and stretchy. But sticking it onto spines could work too. I learned the kite twine method from a thai grafting video, it really helps to keep a scion placed where you want and prevent it from shifting when under pressure but I have found a rubber band or something to provide pressure is needed for larger scions. I figured there was a better way to do it but I wasn't really thinking.. Seems to have worked well though and are still applying generous pressure. I did sterilize the toothpicks with iso before I inserted them into the stock
hookahhead Posted May 21, 2014 Yeah the nylon seems ideal since you can choose how long or wide of piece to use. The hardest part is buying the pantyhose. The cashier won't believe you, "They're for grafting cacti...I swear I'm not a cross-dresser".
franky Posted May 22, 2014 my first graft to take, and it is now showing some considerable growth in like 1 - 2 weeks. Pachanoi x bridgesii
BillyThKid Posted May 22, 2014 This was my first graft attempt ever and it worked! I grafted a Cereus Forbesii monstrose to a pilosocereus azureus root stock for this graft and used the plastic wrap tech to hold the scion down. this graft was made last july, sadly towards the end of this winter my Graft developed orange rot. i thought i would love the whole plant but thankfully the orange spots callused over and its growing fine now. it a week ago. random one last year random last year When it first started it was almost fully flat. i will find more pictures later.

BillyThKid Posted May 23, 2014 Can't say the same about this one though Shoot, what are you talking about? that loph will be fine! if that heals right it will keep growing, the tip was not damaged. Plus you have pups on it you can graft in an emergency. the genetics are still there.
Señor Corrochio Posted May 23, 2014 it's long gone... melted away completely a week after that pic, but I had another copy.

djmattz0r Posted May 23, 2014 This is how I keep birds away from my garden, it's lame but was something I had laying around already (strange yes I know) I used to have birds eating my berries, no problems since incorporating this fella though. I realized I had sunburned one side of the TBM clone-A graft I had after moving it to receive more light so quickly moved it back into less light to hopefully recover. It's raining so hopefully all the grafts that are getting wet won't rot. Here's a few pictures. The damage from the toothpicks used to hold the scion down seems legit New seedling graft on the pere tree I had, cut off all the new growth and grafted this onto one of the branches. Not sure what either of these are but my guess is the larger scion is a Validus and the smaller still unsure. Both were random seedlings I found in small pots that I decided to graft. Also think I finally got this to take, first time I didn't use enough pressure and half of it dried and the vascular tissue never joined. Melted wax growth starting on a bridgesii This graft shooting out a ton of rootlets, not sure if I want to degraft just yet but I think the button would appreciate it
hookahhead Posted May 24, 2014 Damn djmatt, I had heard of this but hadn't remembered about it until your post. Last year I found like 15 large elderberry bushes, when I went back to collect them for jam/wine the birds ate them all! This is a state game land, so I can't put netting over the trees. However, I could probably strategically place 1 or 2 of these
djmattz0r Posted June 16, 2014 T. Validus graft, seeds were from WSS so not sure if this is really a validus but it's looking interesting so far. T. Bridgesii graft on the same stock, it's a 3 scion pereskiopsis tree T. Pach crest finally recovering from mites and showing new growth.
nitrogen Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) Psycho0 x N1 on the left, and SS02 x Lumberjackus (Mel/vin's cross) on the right - these bridgesii x bridgesii crosses look quite different from each other.. I think I'm partial to the SS02 x Lumberjackus cross so far I have to admit.. A fast growing Psycho0 x N1 - this one looks very much like a baby Psycho0 so far, in terms of the color: Another Mel/vin cross - T. bridgesii v. Lumberjackus x T. macrogonus/peruvianus v "Icaros" - I love the color on these - pic doesn't quite capture the beautiful dark green/dark blue thing they have going - this hybrid has grown a bit slower than my others, but I'm starting to adore the way they look.. djmattz0r Posted June 20, 2014 I have thought the same thing but just rolled with it until it got a bit bigger to tell for sure. It looks like I grafted a seedling I had received rather than one I sowed, can't remember exactly but I looked through my ebay purchase history and found I purchased some bridgesii seedlings, most of which died because they were shipped in a bubble mailer and got smushed right before this picture was taken so I'd say it would have to be from them. Who knows what they are, looks a bit terscheckiiish maybe? The graft has slowed down considerably since all the scions are quite large... 8/17/13 2/10/14

mutant Posted June 29, 2014 I haven't grafted for some time and seeing that bridgesii crests of Philo, made me come to my senses... I have been thinking about taking pere and selini cuttings to boost things around.. I have a couple seedlings of nitro crosses at last... DO brigesii crests have to have an areole when grafting ?? I am thinking NOT I am thinking about grafting parts of the cuttings I took the other day.. one is with areoles and all, the other is not... I am also planning to graft eulychnia tonight I intend to attempt 2 or 3 TBM crest on bridgesii and 2 eulychnia on pachanoi Hey do you meditate or concentrate before grafting? I know I kind of , do... I am also planning on using alcohol to clean the knife (Wow!!)
upside Posted June 29, 2014 Hey mutant,, a cupl beers has always meditated my hands to a steady and calm consistency.
mutant Posted June 29, 2014 (edited) no way, I cannot work with beer.... I did them..5 of them, wow what a rush... adrenaline man... as soon as I did the first two eulychnias I thought , I am doped up! did as planned also took some pictures and made a crappy - fun - arty poster on grafting. I took a preselected pup from Eulychnia and grafted each half of the pup on pachanois From the TBCM cuttings I had taken, I grafted each half of the first on relatively biggy bridgesiis, one is pretty biggy and strong clone, TIG and seeing how the duct tape was finishing I tried -and I think it went ok- to graft the whole other cutting I had taken which is of particularly good shape, on a smaller bridgesii seedling much easier to handle. Hope they all take! but seriously if only one of each takes I will be happy, god damn cheap duct tape! I also saw that a Coryphantha areole graft I had done ages ago sprouted, yeah! Using the good old duct tape method, I have to note.. 1. dont use cheap shit, buy good stuff like pro electricians use. cheap shit is shit, doesn't stick well isn't flexible enough.. 2. using bridgesii as a stock... ouch! I bled by hands, cut the spines carefully BEFORE starting doing the graft... I cant imaginge how hard it is to use other stock, seems like a decade since I did that graft on Pilosocereus azureus (still alive btw) Edited June 30, 2014 by mutant
