Moses Posted January 20, 2013 ok so things have been a mess for a while and i've neglected heaps, so whilst cleaning up my cacti i came across this little guy which is one of the non-varigates from this lot http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=22036&hl=moses#entry250749 it was a failed graft stock that i'd just left lying around with a couple of other fails and it's certainly diff from it's company.
Halcyon Daze Posted January 20, 2013 Looks wicked. I've had pups do this before. Even PC patch has done it. It usually corrects itself soon after reaching this size thoiugh. I guess you'll have to wait and see just how funky it's feeling.
qualia Posted January 20, 2013 so, are they knuthianus (sorry i only skimmed that other thread)? bearing in mind they're naturally lumpy, a dropped rib here and there will make it look monstrose in no time. but put another way, if it is it is. if not then not. modernshaman Posted January 20, 2013 That's pretty cool... Hopefully it continues to grow that way and ends up looking similar to the 'Fukurokuryuzinboku'/Breast Cactus. I've seen a bridgesii grow similar to it ONCE on an auction site however it was overpriced so I didn't get it.
Optimystic Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) That is pretty awesome! That word, Furusukiayabonzadillallypalooza, makes me laffIt does look like some tiny D cups I wonder, were the grafts that failed monstrose or crest by chance? I saw a thread on another forum where someone had figured out how to make it happen intentionally but vice versa... the one with I forget which plants grafted to a Monstrose Opuntia species.. and they grafted a pereskie to it as well and got a peres that grows a branch at every aereole Heres one on Opuntia Subulate Monstrose where the scion took on the branching characteristics of the stock http://cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8235&highlight=austrocyclindropuntia+subulata theres another thread on this too but i'll have to keep looking im sure everyones seen it but incase ya haven't I'll admit I still don't know what a chimera is Edited January 20, 2013 by Spine Collector
myco Posted January 20, 2013 unfortunately i would say its very likely to revert to its normal growth soon i have a particular pach clone wich virtually every cut from it does this when it pups you never know though you could end up with something interesting there certainly looks cool now @spine collector a chimera is basically when a graft begins to show charecteristics of both the stock and the scion the genetic material basically mixes together with the stocks DNA being passed on to the graft the word chimera comes from greek mythology rather than explain it heres a wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimera_(mythology)
Optimystic Posted January 20, 2013 Thanx! They could have just said that! I shoulda Wiki'd lol I appreciate you mentioning I had a pach that started off wierd, but not quite that wierd... like the ribs were all trying to arrange themselves but never protruding quite like that... It would be interesting to see a follow up in a few weeks

Moses Posted December 6, 2014 (edited) update of this plant so far it's staying kinda lumpy, may have me a new semi-monstrose. Edited December 6, 2014 by Moses
