What did you do in your sacred garden today?

Recommended Posts

The garden is thriving. :)

I noticed a P.Viridis Shipibo starting to form some flowers which is exciting.

C.Edulis is punching out a load of flowers and a few cacti are busting out fresh pups.

Also planted some more seeds today.

•Anadenanthera Peregrina

•Peganum Harmala

•Latua Pubiflora

•Codariocalyx Motorius

•Clitoria Ternatea

•Nicotiana Rustica

Nice njt, I got my first viridis a while back and it's been covered in ants ever since. Could this be a problem?

Hey @Pedro99

The ants are more than likely farming scale insects. Check on the undersides of leaves and the plant stems and you will see them. My voacanga and viridis that are in the shadier/moister parts are prone to this. Scale is a real pain. Read up on how to treat it before it gets out of hand. Get rid of the scale and the ants will tend to clear out.

Duboisia hopwoodii fruit. Have 3 of similar size. Fingers crossed

Duboisia myoporoides. The seed was gifted to me generously from a SAB member earlier this year and was passed onto a local bloke with a good technique for germinating Duboisia spp. He worked his magic and this is the result

The other day I planted ~ 1 year old ~ Acacia acuminata plantlets (normal + narrow) and a couple other things in the ground. Fingers croseed.

Today I am preparing a GA3 solution for sowing several things, like more Acacia sp, Mandragora sp (I have seeds from all species this year), Hyoscyamus, and some old Ephedra sp. I will also try petalostylis cassioides which I was recently sent. I guess I will treat them as Acacias as the seed is really like an acacia

Potted a bunch of tricho cuts and grafted some lophs. Put my v.africana in larger pot which was way overdue. (The root system reminded me of mung bean shoots). Caapi, psychotria, T.corymbosa, S.Tortuosum and D.cooperi & pereskiopsis cuttings..
I sowed some E.gerardiana seed. It’s my first time growing ephedra so interested to see how it grows. Also got the mixer out the other day and did a big batch of fluffy soil.

Recently potted up and labelled all of the hybrid seedlings I received from a friend, repotted my tallest PC into a 50L pot. Really need to get it in the ground once I get my hard clay soil transforming into something more living!

Spent some time at my new property planning out our food forest and thinking how I'm going to rejuvinate the clay soil into something better (over a long period of time).

Got more info on this soil tek? :P I've not heard of people using a mixer to fluff it up. Guessing it helps with aeration?

First post in here!

Moved into my new place last monday, done a few small things here and there including planting what at my old place was a lot of plants, but here only makes a very small section of garden.

Mostly have been trying to plan the food forest that will eventuate in the years to come.

Today I spread some peastraw on the first little section I made, as time goes by hopefully the serious amount of organic matter I spread will turn the horrid clay dirt that has been for years a virtual carpark into something resembling soil.

Plants I have include but are not limited to, HBWR, Syrian Rue, multiple random Cactus, Valerian, Strawberries, Mint, Parsley, Sage, Sinicuichi lots of peach trees that came up from seeds at the old place, the mother tree had great fruit so if some of them have similar fruit my little peach tree hedge will be great, if not, at least I have something growing at this stage.

I have lots of things not mentioned, and plan on lots more of course,  but Rome was not built in a day and neither will this new garden of mine be.

@XavierDass, I have been reading Dr Redhawks soil series on Permies, he seems like a bit of a guru in the transforming of dirt into soil, I can’t remember any specifics about transforming clay other than smash the organics in there and let the microbes sort it out which is pretty much where I’m gonna go.

I will try different methods in different sections, there will be hugelbeds and raised beds and comfrey composted patches depending on what the whim is at the time.

The goal is to be able to eat solely from it year round in 10 years time.

Because the old owner was a mechanic and had lots of cars on the block I don’t think I will eat from it for the first few years to let the fungi break down any nasties that might be hanging around.

@FerdieJ, sounds like we have similar goals.

I've got a few hugels planned -- also heard daikons and radishes can be good for penetrating heavy soils and introducing organics deeper into the earth.

Vetiver grass seems like it also has some uses for our soil-rejuvenation and preservation goals (as well as a great plant for carbon sequestering).

For now, we have a lot of weeds covering most of the property and all through the existing orchard -- so we've got some ground cover and free compost while I do my planning! :P

@XavierDass I use a mixer because it beats mixing up multiple barrows with a shovel. Work smarter, not harder. ;)

My basic soil mix is 50% 3-5mm washed rocks (blue metal, zeolite, scoria, riverstone) 25% premium potting mix and here’s the real secret to a fluffy mix... 25% coco coir. I then adjust the mineral/organic content from this depending on what I’m potting.

Hope everyones ok with the fires!

Today I planted a heap of seeds, all sorts of things edible, medicinal and ornamental.

The few little sections of garden I have created so far are coming along nicely, everything is flourishing which means I spend more and more time out amongst it which keeps me somewhat sane while I’m not working cause of the fires.

Yesterday I spent some hardearned on a heap of plants, various things including bananas, maqui berries and curry tree, the job for the next few days is now finding suitable spots for them all.

Also last week I found an aquarium for the right price, built into a nice cabinet that will look good somewhere inside. I plan on using it for an aquaponics setup somehow, not quite sure what I want to do just yet, but I’ll figure it out eventually.

now to figure out how to post some pics..

Lots of potting up this week. Mainly cacti and psychotria. Had a lawn mower accident a few days before Xmas which fucked my ankle and put a dent in my garden game. Can’t stop me though. I hobbled on with crutches and got some shit done.  I’m on the mend now. Leaving town for a few days so last minute checks on plants. I tend to get a bit of separation anxiety when i leave my plants but I’ve done my best to make sure they are self sufficient. Ie: water trays, feed, mulch, a few pep talks. Hang in there ya bastards! Don’t like leaving my garden but love coming back to see the new growth.
