Astrophytum thread

Recommended Posts

I have some kikko koh yo seeds as well. Going to plant them soon. I also got some myriostigma quadricostatum variegata seeds. Don't see the variegation yet, but they're still very young. Pretty stoked about them though.

afungitobewith,

I won't get too detailed but Astrophytum Cultivar seed is extremely complex, here are the basic reasons the first few being the major problem,

,

1. People sell seed with the wrong name (usually on purpose to make money), IE they have Myriostigma Nuda which is worth very little and they will write Myriostigma CV Kikko Kohyo which is worth a lot.

2. People put up pictures of a plant and then you expect to get a similar plant from the seed. When in fact they just goggled a nice image and put it up.

3. People are not recording their crosses. In order to know what genetic traits you are likely to get both the Mother and Father need to be known I.E A.Myriostigma X A. Myriostigma CV Kikko Nuda etc.

4. Astrophytum genetics can be hit and miss but the majority of the time it is due to point 1.

With regard to the Koh-yo colour, it means Autumn colour in Japanese, The yellow patches on my plant are Variegation, Koh-yo is a temporary colour change that usually occurs at the start or end of the growing season and can be any colour.. Orange, Yellow, Peach, Purple etc.

The person I got the seeds from crossed them himself and I trust him. They are hybrids of cultivars. I actually have seen the mother and father plants for them and pictures of their offspring. Pretty stoked about them.

Thanks HelloNasty.

I got them off an auction site. Then when I check out one of the other listings they had, it showed a picture a 5 year old with a paint brush pollinating flowers FML

:wave-finger:

I still hold onto some hope that when they gain some size, some colors will start to show more. Or do they pretty much keep color from youth and mine are bunk.

Generally Astrophytum traits get stronger/more pronounced as they get older., so if you see the trait early on that's a good sign.

Don't worry nearly all seed sellers don't produce the seed themselves, so the info is at least third hand and has been translated from Japanese to German to English :) lol

HN, in your experience is variegation related to genetics that much in Astrophytum?

From what i've seen two variegated astrophytum parents will generally give lots of variegated seedlings. I'm interested to see what HN thinks too.

Yes variegation is definitely passed on. One variegated parent is usually enough to produce the trait in offspring. Usually stronger when the mother is variegated and father normal. However this is not always the case and occasionally you get unexpected (good) results when the mother is normal and father variegated or has another trait.

Then the person sent these two for free with it. A,. myriostigma cv. tricostatum and I'm not sure about the second. Maybe super kabuto x myriostigma or possibly the same cross as the first plant.

I would love to get some seed that produces variegated asterias. Or just get a mature variegated asterias. Those things are awesome, but expensive. I guess I'll just try my luck at growing seeds until I get one. Lol.

New plants. 2 variegated A. myriostigma and 2 variegated A. asterias from thailand. Finally got those variegated asterias I wanted. And on their own roots too!!! I will breed them when they're older and have variegated astro seedlings. Yay! Now just to wait for 3 years. Lol, they're tiny as hell right now.

I believe it to be a Astrophytum Myriostigma cv FUKURYU

Not sure exactly what it is but I was told it was FUKURYU at least, if anyone knows more about the specific cultivars please enlighten me :)

The spines indicate it's a hybrid, since myrio has none. most likely has at least ornatum in it

Nice fukuryu though, as well as those variegates hostilis
