turtle_hermit Posted April 5, 2013 Jox, those look incredibly healthy. I'm guessing you germed in these containers? What kind of medium are they in?
Jox Posted April 5, 2013 Thanks turtle_hermit, Yes your right about being in there original containers. I make up my own mix using about 50% premium seed raising mix (sifted to get out any larger pieces of bark) 25% propagation sand & 15% very fine perlite (washed) & 10% very fine gravel. I am finding this mix to work quite well with most of my cacti seeds, after a month I add some courser gravel as top dressing to stop any fungal growth. Jox Posted April 24, 2013 ^^There beautiful mate, I am putting in an order for variegated astro seed with you zelly , if they produce seed mate I would love to buy some . Awesome cacti! Cheers jox
Stillman Posted August 10, 2013 So update of some of those grafted Astro crosses I made. There is a very high percentage of monstrose growth not hugely monstrose but not symmetrical either. I sent a few of these crosses out has anyone else seen any weirdness? Will be interesting to see if they continue to display monstrose growth or revert to normal growth
Jox Posted August 10, 2013 Looking very nice mate! I got some of your seeds & have had excellent germination rates with them, I have left all of mine growing on there own (No grafts) & have not noticed anything funky yet. I will take some photos in the next day or two & add them here. All my Astro seedlings are growing well & will need to be potted up this week. Cheers Jox
woof woof woof Posted August 10, 2013 A pic of four that decided to bloom all on the same day 4astrosDSC_0088b.jpg Zelly How do you decide with wich you want to make hybrids? Never really thought about that process. Atleast the 1st astro 2 flowers, so you can make to seperate pollinations.
bogfrog Posted August 10, 2013 Wow Stillman, those grafts are looking incredible. Very funky indeed.
Jox Posted August 12, 2013 (edited) Hey all, here is an update on my Astro seedlings as you can see they need to be potted up very soon (I will be doing it tomorrow). I am very happy with how well these seedlings are growing under my 600watt MH, they were 7 months old yesterday. myco Posted August 12, 2013 beautiful jox just beautiful i've been away from home for the last 2 months i really cant wait to get back and see how all my asterias seedlings are going
Jox Posted August 12, 2013 Thanks a lot guys, complements from you two mean a lot to me as I regard you both as five star cactus grows ! @ GOT, all 67 A.myriostigma are from my seed. They are from a four ribbed & a five ribbed parents, I was hoping I would end up with more quads but it looks like I have only ended up with 2 out of the 67. I was also keen to see if it made a difference which way they had been crossed & if one would produce more quads than the other but it turned out the quad (male) x five rib (female) gave me one out of 38 & the five rib (male) x quad (female) gave me one out of 29 so it really didn't make a difference. Maybe in a few years I can cross these two little quads & get a higher percentage of quads with there seeds. Cheers Jox
bogfrog Posted August 12, 2013 Oh baby! Those astro's are looking incredible Jox! You must be very proud So many happy little astrofaces.. ...And the caput medusa's!!
GoOnThen Posted August 12, 2013 Here are some pics of my grafts taken about a month ago. Here is the benefit of grafting small seedlings onto trich stock. This was grafted the same time as the rest on pere. I find it best to graft seedlings of this size onto very small pups and putting a bit of weight on the scion helps them to take. A.myriostigma nudum Jox if my memory is correct these are from your seeds. They are tagged but I am not at home at the moment Most of these are from assorted jap hybrid seed Cheers Got
bogfrog Posted August 12, 2013 Awesome grafts GOT That nudum looks great. Here are a couple recent additions:
Jox Posted August 12, 2013 They look great mate, I look forward to seeing more pic's of the Jap cultivators in the future ! I will be keen to hear from you & Stillman about details on how old / how long been grafted & current size of the A.myriostigma seeds from me, I am very interested to compare how they have gone grafted v's seed grown. Cheers Jox
GoOnThen Posted August 12, 2013 Thanks Jox I will update this in the next month or so. Nothing of mine has been growing very fast over winter as they haven't been getting the attention that they need but in they are starting to get going now they are getting watered properly. Awesome grafts GOT That nudum looks great. Here are a couple recent additions:image.jpgimage.jpg Thanks Bogfrog The new additions look great. The three ribbed one is really cool Cheers Got
Stillman Posted August 12, 2013 Jox pic of one of your babies I grafted about 8 I think all are 5 ribs except for one. heres a cool one the mice love these guys is weird I had to put them in a protected area, anyway the mice ate the apical growth point out of this one so it pupped one of my favourite grafts
Jox Posted August 25, 2013 ^^That looks cool mate. Well I said I had to pot up my little astros, it took hours & I was blown away by ow many seedlings came out of one take away container & now how much room they are going to talk up in the grow room! I have also come to the conclusion there is no need to graft astros if you can afford to have them under a 600watt light, these were sown on the 7/1/13 making them 7 months & 17 days old, I am very happy with how quick these have grown. From one little container to 110 6cm pots! A.aserias X super kabuto A.myriostigma, five rib & four rib A.caput medusa Cheers Jox
Stillman Posted August 26, 2013 caputs are looking good dude awesome work.
Jox Posted August 26, 2013 Thanks mate, I am very happy with them, three of them came from seed from Italy & the other seven came from seeds out of the USA. I have done a little research on them & apparently they grow pretty quick, so hopefully I will be able to supply members here with seed .
GoOnThen Posted August 26, 2013 You have been busy Jox. Are those pot the 62mm squats ? I have been using them for sowing seed and I am also planing to do the same as you and also use them for potting up seedlings. I have found using the 30 x 35 cm trays a good size to handle and you can also dunk the whole tray into a container to bottom water a tray at a time.
