Astrophytum thread

The baby graft's flower decided to open today! It was a good thing I decided to have a look at it before heading off to work this morning. Hopefully it's more open this evening when I get back home.

That was mine, and unfortunately it died. :( I tried grafting it, and I should have just left it.

Here's one of it's siblings.

Here are some other variegates and stuff that I started from seed. A lot of them were pure white seedlings.

This one is pretty weird. It pups from every areole. Non-grafted because I wanted to see if it keeps this characteristics on it's own roots.

Pimento, it looks like your asterias are getting amazing growth!! That lighter color on the new growth looks surreal!! Amazing! Anyways, what kind/mixture of substrate do you use for your astros?

Gees Hostilis you have some beautiful plants there man, some of the colours in them are totally choice.

variegates, crests, multi colours and mutants, you certainly struck gold with the seed you have planted. They all look really healthy.

They are wild now man, when they are larger they will be gobsmacking :worship:

Im sorry bout the variegated seedling, your avatar the obituary

the sibling is a very nice specimen, great thats its existing on its own roots.

Excellent that you will have so many plants to cross in the future

I've saved every pic to drool over :drool2:

The mix I've found works well is 3 parts scoria, 1 part small rocks, 1 part potting mix. this fast draining mix I've found is best for the cultivars and the hybrids.

When i bought super kabuto's and the asterias x's they came potted in this mix and I've tried to replicate it for the rest of my plants.

Ornatum and capricorne can handle more potting mix and gravel instead of scoria, myriostigma's seems to like it way drier.

they get good light and heat, fed every 2 weeks.

Im very new at this and am learning more everyday.

Glaukus mate, felt exactly the same when i first found out about the endless range of collector cacti and the super world of trichocereus.

That's a flower bud. After if flowers, if you polinate it the bottom of the flower bud will immediately start to swell and turn into the fruit. The fruits don't pop out of the body like with lophophora.

if you polinate it the bottom of the flower bud will immediately start to swell and turn into the fruit.

upon successful pollination it could take the flower a week or so before you begin to see noticeable swelling of its base. fruits are ripe when they split open which they do occasionally, or when the whole fruit falls off the plant. seeds need to be picked out of the fruit and allowed to dry out a bit.

I need to get me a few paint brushes to help pollinate these guys and start producing seeds.

I need to get me a few paint brushes to help pollinate these guys and start producing seeds.

i get much better success rates using a pair of tweezers, plucking pollen laden anthers and depositing them directly onto the pistils

also much easier to clean the tweezers between pollinations etc
