Question

Was given a very unhealthy, etiolated cutting. Cut the top half off and rooted the stump which has since thrown the pup shown in the pics. The stump had virtually no spines on it, probably due to a very hard life

The pup is beautiful and is the diameter of a Bridgesii. The stump is quite fat and definately not a Bridg, more Peru with no spines.

What do you guys/girls think?

Cheers

This looks a lot like a Bridgesii. I know you ruled it out because of the stump but i cant help but noticing the similarities. Its jumping into my eyes, you know? :) I usually never say that something could be a hybrid but this could really be one. Did you get this from someone out of the Ethno Scene?

Yes. Very kindly given to me by Alchemica when I first arrived in Australia to help kick start my collection. The cutting given looked nothing like that pup. No name given to me, just a Peruvinoid of some sort.

One of my favourite plants now!

You know, i always cringe when people ID something as a hybrid because apart from the scene, there are not so many people out there who actively cross San Pedro Cacti with each other. Compared to the number of plants and seeds that are thrown on the market from people like knize and köhres, the number is scaringly low. So lets say you have an unusual cactus that you pulled from ebay or a nursery and looks unlike the typical peruvianus or pachanoi, its most likely a local variety. Local varieties develope themselves because of the plants that surround them and differ somehow from the typical botanical form. Actually, they ARE hybrids; natural hybrids. But i rather avoid that word because botanically, i guess it would be better to call them varieties. Even if you cross lets say pachanoi x pachanoi, what would be pure, you can still get unusual plants. Its the same with people. Sometimes kids look very unlike their parents, even when the postman wasnt banging the shit out of old lady Schlitz.

BUT every once in a while, there are real hybrids that were crossed from people here and i wouldnt be surprised if this is one. Looks something like a mix of bridgesii and peruvianus. But because of what i said before, i could be wrong as hell, you know. Could just be a weird bridgesii. Would be great if Alchemica could write something abut the origins.

I'll PM him and see if he can shed any light on the plant.

it looks like the spines have been removed from the stump?

It was hand delivered with lots of other spiny plants, all spines intact. A couple of the spines on the stump are broken off but other areole are completely smooth with a few random shorter spines still there.

Sorry guys, clueless myself. Think it was a seed grown from some local ethnoheads... I call them all 'cacti'.

The spination & how the spines break off toward the base look very much like bridgesii to me. The SS02 clone is a fat bridgesoid, but the spines look a bit different on that one. Could be an SS02 x Bridge type thing or bridge x peru hybrid or just a really fat / mature bridgesoid cutting. We can get some awesome specifically bread tricho hybrids here so if it was seed grown a hybrid is a real possibility.

Will watch it grow and mature and post some more pics down the line.

Cheers for all your comments.

First thing I thought was that it looked like a Psycho0 that hasn't grown its spines fully out yet. After looking at it a bit more, I definitely think it's a bridgesii cross (which includes Psycho0).
