what the hell is this strange plant

the other day i notice this strange thing had popped up in one of my pots,

initially i thought it was a mushroom, but upon closer inspection, its certainly not a mushroom..

it was quite difficult to get a quality photo, but there is strong really strange markings all over the browny piece, which must be the seed-shell.

this is day or so later, after a little water, looking more normal, but still like nothing i have seen before

the pot from which it sprouted was filled with Dalton's cutting mix, which is mostly pumice with some coco coir and sand, so maybe it was a stray seed in the mix,

i havent sown any seeds into this pot and was frankly quite suprised to see it there are this pot has been kept dry over winter.

any thoughts or suggestions most welcome

Might need to wait till the seed coat falls off and some true leaves appear before it can be identified. Is the pot outside (or has it been)? A seed could have blown in from somewhere (i often have randoms popping up in otherwise clean commercial mixes straight out of the packet)

The pot has sat indoors all winter, but the bag of cutting mix has sat open outside for a while, could be where the culprit got in.

I'll take another photo once the seat coat has fallen off and try again.

I get shrooms popping up all over the place, in my vege garden, out of cacti pots, along the sides of my stairs, so it was certainly my first thought.

And i can't say i eat many chickpeas..

Hahaha here (in the tropics) its more unusual for something to not randomly pop up in pots lol i think half tje weeds in my garden have arrived by hitch hiking in potting mix or soil on the roots of plants iv ordered in from somewhere else. Theres this one thing that is like a poinsettia (those things with the red bracts that you see a lot around christmas - euphorbiaceae) that hitched a ride in from plants from across town, which id never seen in our yard a couple of years go which now pop up everywhere -in every pot, crack in the cement or patch of disturbed soil

Plants are extremely industrious aren't they.

I'm certainly not in the tropics but i see the same thing happening here, manukas, wineberries and ferns keep every cactus company in their pots.

I cant see the point in trying to eridicate them yet, maybe if the trees get bigger than the cacti i will.

At least you have good weeds by the sound of it ;) manuka is a good one, and id prefer ferns to these sappy euphorbia things any day (they exude white sap even when gently brushed and seem to be impossible to eradicate and quickly outcompete whatever is in the pot). Nutgrass and what we call bindi's here (i think actually a type of Alternanthera -Alligator weed- but tribulus, which is more commonly known as bindi's are also around, but not a 'problem' usually) are the other big problems here - also impossible to eradicate and takes over ordinary lawn anywhere that is exposed.

Sorry it took a while, i wanted to wait until the leaves were fully out beofre i took another picture.

second set of leaves is just starting to form

I'm guessing its some sort of morning glory, or maybe an ivy or something.

Any guesses most welcome!

Here's a Mirabilis mutiflora I threw in a coir ebb-flow tray for reference. The cotyledons do look a little HBWR-ish.

Interesting to see what your true leaves look like.

those seeds are most definitely Mirabilis, likely as some said jalapa or multiflora. if the opposite leaves taper to a point and are bright green, likely the former; if the leaves are more rounded, glaucus and feel slightly rubbery, the latter. either way, nice surprise!
