Mites on my A. obtusi?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have noticed some damage happening on the phyllodes on my young A. obtusifolia's, on closer inspection i can see little mites & there tiny white faeces on the curled up underside of the phyllodes.

I am curious to work out how I managed to get this little pest on my Acacias, as they only seem to be attacking them at the moment. I have all kinds of plants in the one greenhouse, cacti, broadleaved plants, orchids & other native plants like Brachychiton rupestre (QLD bottle tree) which are right next to the A. obtus & don't have a single mite on them!

Can anyone recommend a good way to eradicate this pest? I have started to manually remove them, just by wiping them off but I would like to find a spray that has maximum death for pest minimal damage to my plants. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Are you sure they are mites, they almost look like a type of scale.

Diatomaceous earth could help. if you mix it with water and add a drop two of detergent so it sticks to the little bastards and then spray the whole plant. When it dries out it will grind the little suckers joints up.It works for mites too.

There's a few suppliers in QLD, greenharvest being one, I can find it on their website but I can't see any price listing. A few others have it too.

Thanks for the info SallyD  ,

Yeah I'm positive there a little mite, as there far to mobile to be scale. I have made up a homemade poison with N. tabacum (2 leaves & a couple of handfuls of sticky seedpods, boil, left to soak for 2 days then strained), a few drops of tea-tree oil & a few drops of washing detergent, mixed up in a 750ml spray bottle. I have sprayed it on a trial plant & so far so good, I will let you know if things start going wrong.

Maybe it was their droppings I was looking at.

Let us know your spray works.

get some lady bugs and predatory mites and make the green house friendly for them and they will take care of a lot of

excess bugs and simply catch them when not needed and put them in a jar and feed them aphids and mites

do you use a sulfur flume as i find this reduces bug attack's in green house culture

Cheers BR, I put a heap of ladybirds in there about a week ago & they did a good job at cleaning my plants up but bailed with out doing a full eradication. The spray I applied a couple of days ago seems to of eliminated them completely & today I watered my plants from the base as not to wet the foliage, the plants don't seem to have been bothered by the spray but I would like to see how they are going in a few weeks before I call it a success. I have never gassed my greenhouse before & honestly never even thought about it, you have got me thinking now! I used to get rid of mite problems on my reptiles simply by removing there water bowls in the morning & setting of a flea bomb off in the house as I would leave for work, this would work every time.

Cheers
