Micromegas Posted February 20, 2013 Saturday and Sunday 17 & 18 Feb, 38 and 39 degrees makes flowers melt quickly. And yet... Pretty much just the PC pedro that is flowering now. I think this IS the last of it. Garden's getting really thirsty amazing they have the energy to pump out so many flowers! @ bit, at the moment I am a bit short on time to be working out how to upload this to a drop box. If I do get around to it, I'll mention it to you. You have awesome plants anyway!

Snowfella Posted March 13, 2013 Not my plant and not 100% sure you could call it a columnar as it tends to spend most of it's time laying down....still not to common a sight to see though. Stenocereus eruca in bud, photo taken out at Hamiltons a mere hour ago.
GoOnThen Posted March 13, 2013 That is a gnarly looking cacti which is going to transform itself for a day or so with a large majestic flower. Aren't cacti wonderful things. Cheers Got
zelly Posted March 13, 2013 Thanks for the pic snowfella. Please try to get it in full bloom if possible. I've got two fairly large ones in pots, I guess I'll have to put them in the ground to see flowers.....
Optimystic Posted March 13, 2013 Hey Zelly, since you labeled it Validus #2 im wondering if thats the same one you crossed with LJ???Sure looks like it but I'd appreciate if you help me to get to know their parents @ Snowfella... wow that is a super spiny but lovely beast! Right up my spiny alley I will BOLO for that one
Snowfella Posted March 14, 2013 I'll do what I can mate. Wife now knows I'm officially nuts as I've made it my mission to catch this one in flower and with it apparently being a night flowering plant there's only one real chance of doing so....early morning. So I was up at the crack of dawn this morning and headed out to Hamiltons at opening time. Unfortunately it's still a day or 3 early it seems and the bud still remained closed. Going to keep heading out there every morning to see if it has opened, with my luck it will be Sunday when they are closed and I can't get in through the gates though. Did however catch this one in bloom out there this morning. Guessing Espostoa melanostele.
Micromegas Posted March 15, 2013 This IS the end of the flower now. March 12 Despite the dryness, it's been an excellent year for flowers!

Snowfella Posted March 19, 2013 Persistance payed off! Been out every morning since Thursday, minus Sunday as they are closed, and finally caught it in bloom today. Very Echinopsis looking flower if you overlook the lack of hair on the stem.

zelly Posted April 22, 2013 update on the first buds of the season...I'm going to have flowers sooner than expected.... the scop is exploding with new buds.....err fuzz balls, 10-11 so far and counting a short spine macrogonus first timer (hoping for more than just 1) and the huanucoensis is sporting new fuzz balls
zelly Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) woot! first tricho flowers this year! Off to an early start! T. grandiflorus validus2 first cross! validus2 x grandifloris pollen from this epi will be used on the next few flowers to open Edited to report that none of the epiphyllium crosses took, but the good news is I've already got one fruit of the validus x red flowered grandiflorus. So the burning questions are: 1) Will flowers from the resulting offspring be some coloration of red & white? 2) Will the stems be tall or compact? mutant Posted May 4, 2013 awesome material zelly! yoohoooooooooooo on my side too granted I have had one scop flower twice, in the ground and very hard grown, have shown this but this is the first signs of flowering of a Tricho at my roof and guess fuckin wut?? it is the very same KK339 I first got as a 2 y.o. seedling from incog, and then started getting hooked in cacti some 4-5 years ago This particular clone, I got for, say 5 years, has been severely cut in the base for propagation purposes, and I have produced numerous plants off that clone. It rules for grafting, Sometime ago, not long, I decided I am not cutting this one any more, and keeping in the roof. It even fell from wind and got a bit scarred recently. Very happy and excited to see my first pachanoi buds in the clone that got me into cacti. In the original mother plant, that is... Photos will follow, its too small now anywayz seeing how my harrisia is budding , I hope I can easily experiment with crossing trichoXharissia antrichoXharissia and vice versa , as I hope they will be flowering simultaneously
nitrogen Posted May 16, 2013 My garden isn't showing much for flower buds - but I've got a T. peruvinaus v. "short-spine", psycho0, and TPM working up to flower - will get pics if they develop.. Been using a lot of Miracle Grow on my cacti over the winter and spring, to increase vegetative growth - not sure this helps flower formation though.. mutant Posted May 16, 2013 Despite the dryness, it's been an excellent year for flowers! maybe its just because of it!!! our season is active now, and many cati have already flowered / are flowering : rebutia/sulcorebutia/lopho/mammi (steno = long done), astrophytum are at their peak, gymnos too, but not trichocerei , hey they are supposed to flower later oh I already got 5-6 Harissia jusberti flowers, much more buds coming I got a couple buds forming on a kk339 , actually the descedant from the very first kk339 I got, all others are clones off it, this is the original mother plant of all my kk339s. I will let them grow a bit, then I take a shot. In a way, this is the first cycle of my cactus carreer. where are you incognito? you should eventually show up when I show the bud. I cannot guarantee the full open flower, cacti flowers can be sneeky bastards. fucken hedonistic son of a bitch, you got me into this, you are to blame for all this fucken shite! and also got one bud in OZ clone OMAR pachanoi. This is a pretty unpruned cactus of my collection... grows fast , pups a lot, your typical pachanoi, looks a lot like ALF . Thinny pach's, not PC's though... makes me think If I hadn't pruned all my biggy super pedros and scops (did that recently to move them huge cacti off the roof] , they might as well flower as well... well, I have too much seed I haven't yet sown, so , and also growing some new forms ... ----- Snowfella I love you man. For those comments. and pic I got an Espostoa, not tha same as yours. got it from very young / got it 6 years. I got it like 10 cm heigh, and its over a meter with 2 new colums now it flowered last year, twice, did not make it to see it going that most columnars are night openers, I thought it too would be night. dunno, I have missed the flower couple times. It looks a bit like the Pilosocereus one. I already missed a flower opening of 4-5 flowers recently . just before reading your post, I was havinga talk with my father telling him to keep an eye on these fuckers, maybe early in the morging, when I am not often awake... because these buds seem really ready Thing is those fuckers might be withered be tomorrow noon, with the full sun, even though we're having very cloudy days. I have taken shot of the buds , but I really wanna photograph the flower, so , I will let you know... Let me add [as a suggestion to new comers] : please take care of other plants too, other columnars, along with your trichos. Not only will it give your collection a special tone , but it will give you immediately the basis for looking at what makes a genus, a species, taxonomy, variation, evolution. And then some

Auxin Posted August 1, 2013 ..... we need to find tricho triggers..... I just re-read this whole thread and I noticed something. Iron. Some awesome flowering action is going on in red clay soil. Plant root exudates can free iron from that. Some nice flowering is going on in black clays, those can have iron. Blood and bone has been mentioned as being correlated to good flowering events, that gear is 0.5% iron. I jumped on google earth and looked at peruvian mountains near cities that Trichs are named after, lots of soil in those cactusy areas is stained orange or red from iron. Is there any additional support for this hypothesis?
