Tio Posted January 1, 2013 (edited) Here is a picture of my first Trichocereus pachanoi that I have seen producing flowers. The first two flowers opened on boxing day and the rest are growing at a very fast rate. (I never realized how fast they grow!) Micromegas Posted January 2, 2013 Hello, this is the last lot I will post as my time in the garden is coming to an end I need to go back to work! This is the first summer in a while I have been home consistently to see the show (about two weeks) and it's been really fantastic I really can't express my gratitude to the plants for their endeavours! It's been a magnificent performance and a pleasure to be around. Huachuma has flowers like no other. As for the pollen I just don't know there's never any there or there's too many bees to put a hand in! but i'm not really fussed i enjoy the bees. I'll get some pink pollen next year though I promise. These plants don't ever get fed or watered. There's been no significant rain in my garden since early september. Thanks for looking, all best, Micro.

mushroomman Posted January 11, 2013 My validus flower is finally opening When cross pollinating is it best to use a fine paint brush or just a Cotten bud?
nitrogen Posted January 12, 2013 I get the pollen into a ziplock bag, by first rustling it out of the flower, and then I take a steak knife to scoop little bits of the pollen out and onto various parts of the other flower's stigma - with a pointy knife you can basically drop a little clump of pollen right in the opening. Using cotton swaps you wind up with more pollen trapped in the swab than on the stigma.

Thanks nitrogen, I ended up using one of my gf's new fine makeup brushes last night, I will use your method with the small amount of pollen i have left tonight when the other flower opens , I'll let u know how they go.

Optimystic Posted January 13, 2013 These plants have helped me so much with patience ... and yet I cannot wait to see one bloom in person Thanks for all the pics my goodness... bit Posted January 13, 2013 So, Martin flowered this weekend, unfortunately I was out of Aucks and missed it until it was half closed so I didn't take pics. Definitely a huge flower, almost the size of a dinner plate when fully open. Good news though, many other trich flowers opened at the same time, so there's a high chance it was pollinated. Also, there's another bud, so if the warm weather holds up we could have another flower in a few weeks.

Gardening, landscaping, growing plants and lately focusing on cactus has given me alot of healing, peace , patience, harmony and wisdom. I respect them alot and give them alot of time, plants heal the soul. look forward to seeing your photos when your cactus bloom. =)
mutant Posted January 18, 2013 hey you fuckers are your trichocerei protected from watering in winter ( I mean the real winter, not your summer ) I was wondering if trichocerei like some winter rest in order to flower or at least resulting in more flowers next season, as several real cacti do
inti Posted January 19, 2013 hey you fuckersare your trichocerei protected from watering in winter ( I mean the real winter, not your summer ) I was wondering if trichocerei like some winter rest in order to flower or at least resulting in more flowers next season, as several real cacti do apparently i read somewhere and also had the experience. If a tricho doesnt get much direct sun in winter periods. The as sun rises in sky in spring and it gets direct sun. It stimulates seasonal response and flowering. as far as water goes. I dont water trichos in winter. But they do get rainned on. And they havent rotted or anything. they do fine. how cold are your winters? like snow ?
mutant Posted January 19, 2013 [talking about roof] winters are mild and my trichocerei, and other columnars get rained all winter, even real cacti like Ferocacti, Rebutias, Echinopsis, even Astrophytum myriostigma! so mine haven't flowered because I keep chopping them up, it will come in time!
