Columnar Flower Buds. Got some ? Post them here.

^^ ill second this

i had some pollen sent over from a really kind international donor, a freebie i might add which was really appreciated as i had no other source of pollen that year

but i couldnt get my flower to accept the pollen.

in previous years i had crossed it was fresh pollen and made fruit,

Because my international pollen came from a respected breeder i do not doubt it was collected and stored correctly, but we cant control what happens in the mail

you'd be amazed how quickly previously frozen pollen goes bad in transit thru the mail system, most especially traveling internationally. consider sending next day air...

Zelly, have you experimented with sending fresh /desiccated/ pollen overseas /not a frozen one /..

I also wonder if a second round of desiccation, for the previously freezed pollen, will increase the chances of successful overseas pollination.. :innocent_n:

what about some sorta icey chem pack?

i'll bet there's some kinda chemicals floating around somewhere being utilised to keep things cool in transit somehow...

and of course in a safe and appropriate manner...

maybe thinking of heat packs for tropical fish imports and reversing variables made me think that I guess ...

so there's gotta be someway of keeping a delivery frozen with a bit of ingenuity somehow surely?

wish i could think of it but stumped for now..

how do the spermers do it?

i know some of our zoo's buy panda spung from overseas in Asia and fly it in

but validus pollen seems far more important so I'm sure there's some kinda provision hiding somewhere

and on a side note .. perhaps there is a best time of year or season for the transit dependent upon destination and travel path?

and another side note .. bet ya glad it was gone-off pollen arriving rather than spoilt-batch panda spung eh?

First ever buds on this PC, bit of a surprise it's taken this long as it's a good 9 foot tall by now.

Hey Snowfella, nice flowers.

Listen, are you sure that's a PC plant? It looks kind of normal pach (to me) with those 'V's, spines and ribs.. maybe that's just what a healthy fat PC looks like though.

Señor Jefferson's plant has the classic pc look. ( i think it is pretty amazing for a pc that small to be flowering) How tall is that pach Señor?

I would bet my left testical that Snowfellas is a true pachanoi...v grooves, areole shape and direction, but the dead give away is the black flower hair.

Snowfella is there any chance of a few more photos?its a really sexy looking pach.

I would also be super keen to trade for some of the pollen from that plant if your keen?

Cheers

Yeah it's pretty tiny, 45 cm height and 5 to 5.5 cm diameter.

To be honest I have no real idea what it's heritage is, picked it up a few years back from Hamilton's as a less than a foot long cutting. Didn't do much while in a pot but once out in the ground it's gone nuts with growth. Seem to suck up any moisture it gets, to the point that it splits badly down by the base.

See if I can hustle up some more shots, anything in particular I should focus on?

And pollen can be done, never collected it before so would need some pointers though.

Edit: here's some more shots of it, both old and new ones from this afternoon, tossed them up in their own topic for good measure.

Nice!

Snowfella, that looks identical to what i call kk339 in my own collection. Much like others have also concurred, i wouldn't call that plant a PC - just a nice, cool pachanoi :)

You should collect pollen like Master B suggested, there are going to be heaps of cool flowerings this season...

I have a scopxpsycho0, as well as an 8 year old Icaros that have buds... I'm thinking we need to do some sort of pollen trading thread.

Finally broke out in full bloom tonight, thought it was last night but walked outside a little while ago and the smell was unmistakable!

This PC has never flowered in 15 years. Then, a few stems fell over and broke off. I left them un-rooted all winter before finally rooting them in the spring.

Now they are blooming like crazy! ... even got a few pollinated

PC is popping in a few places of the garden - these are my large grafting stock so will keep a few of these to flower, (4 or 5 I guess), and cut and graft onto the rest.
