morel season

Recommended Posts

Just a heads up to those that hunt morels. Season is booming after what I thought would be a pretty poor show. Ive been checking patches over the past few weeks with no fruit to show but yesterday they were everywhere, had a lazy stroll with my girl and the kids and got just over 2kg. If I put some time in I believe that number could have been easily tripled. Get out to the granite country folks, these lil babies are delicious and well worth the effort!!

I Just found some of these growing out of the bricks behind the coffee tin we use for an ashtray at work. I thought at first someone had dumped some rotten fruit. But it makes sense that if they like popping up in burnt out areas that an ashtray may be somewhat similar in eviroment! Allthough I am nowhere near any bushland and in a rather inner city location.

I just found a nice patch fruiting from woodchips around an apartment complex. Black morels,I believe. This one demanded my attention..as in this case, the cap had double back over itself and was growing into the ground. Looked like a H.R Giger alien! Smelled like marzipan. I'd also just shaved ym head..and the lines of the cap were all flowing backward, and looked just like my noggan felt: ) I'm gonna go ive the patch a good watering and see what happens : )

Carve out a piece that hasn't been exposed to air and get it on agar :) It will come right back to life !

Righto! now to find me some petri dishes and some agar!!! Thanks for the idea! would I need to keep it at a particular temp?

Leaving it at room temperature is perfectly fine, thats what i would do personally.

I am not sure what temp Morel would grow best at so i would recommend erring on the side of caution rather than putting it in any kind of heating chamber.

Best of luck, keep us updated !
