Gymnocalycium thread

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever come across this one before? Gymnocalycium pseudomalacocarpus.

The specialist cacti shop in NZ sells them. There is very little info anywhere online about this species/cultivar.

None the less this was a good score for $4.00

This isn't even variegated ( or sunburnt ) . Its just its natural colouring and the markings are really interesting aswel.

wow cool a clumping gymno calicium!

as for the second picture, its a small Stenocactus (some still call them Echinofossulatus, a strange sounding name)

like gymnos, they require rest from watering during the cold period, but unlike gymnos, they love their sun tan, so, the more sun they receive, the prettier spines they will reward you with....

I love Stenocacti! Note: they are notoriously difficult to classify as for their species - some species excluded.

They all have awesome flowers

All my gymnos are pumping flowers everywhere.

This is my guerkeanum x baldianum in flower from last summer. Awesome flower, photo does not do it justice.

That is a great effort mate and a stunning flower. :)

Are you going to do more crosses this year? I am going to see if I can get some to produce seeds this year it was a total fail last year.

I have to try and work out how to cross my crest. The problem I had was the flowers didn't open fully so it hard to get pollen in there. I will try using the stamens this year I had success with my Trich's this way more so than using a brush.

I did put your seeds down a while ago they germinated well but one cross I only have a couple surviving yet the other way are going really well. I am going to graft a few soon hopefully I will get a couple onto Trich stock.

Got some of the crosses I did I actually opened the flower up a bit with a scalpel, and using the actual stamens is the best bet.

Another shot of the hybrid, pretty happy with the flower I had hoped for a apricot tone but no such luck. Today I crossed this flower with a G. ragonesi, in a years time I should have a photo of that progeny lol.

They look awesome Stillman - next time you're out with your camera, could you get a shot of one from the side? I'm yet to acquire a Gymnocalycium, so I live vicariously through others :)

Some of my ragonesii hybrids are opeing, most are typical white with little variation from the mother genotype. But one is opeing today or maybe tomorrow which appears to be a pink/ red colour. This is very weird as mother is typical ragonesii father is green closed flower, G mihanovichii.

Bad photo but you can see the pinkish colour in the flower

DSCF2438_zps2a6fda36.jpg

This is another seedling from the seed batch with the expected cream coloured petals. Only produced about 50 seeds, I hand pollinated it myself, so not sure where the pinkish colour is coming from?

I'll keep you updated once it opens.

here's a pic of the father plant in flower

Hybrids for this year... G guerkeanum are one of my favourite Gymnos with a interesting yellow flower. So this might be a unusual hybrid depending on genetic dominance.

G guerkeanum isn't a prolific flower producer but anistii is so who knows what might throw?
