Stillman Posted November 2, 2012 Got pollinate the Crest Polinate the crest.
GoOnThen Posted November 3, 2012 Hey Stillman should I pollinate the crest I can not believe I didn't think to do that last night. The only other flower that I have open at the moment is the baldianum and that has been open for a couple of days. The bruschii finished a while ago but I do have buds on a number of other Gymno's and there are heaps of buds on the mihanovichii crest and that flower in my pic is the first to open. Great plants Che. Keep the photos coming Cheers Got
Stillman Posted November 3, 2012 I have been making a heap of crosses using the baldianum as a father, because they have a great colour and always seem to be in flower. give it a go. I actually pull the baldianum flower off and take the anthers and rub them directly into the mother flower and have had really good results, thanks for that tip Moses. 2013 is gonna be a good year to grow some hybrids
GoOnThen Posted November 3, 2012 I normally use a tiny paint brush on my Lophs but I will give that way a go when I get home. Cheers Got

GoOnThen Posted November 3, 2012 crests just startin to flower if i can collect enough pollen for shipping i'll send some over to you Stillman and see what you can get from it and just noticed a flower starting on my trichtomas baldianum crest Very nice Moses I just found another thread with pics of that baldianum crest in flower from last year it is a great looking plant. I would be keen to try and produce more crest's if you end up with any spare pollen. I presume the chance of producing crest's is higher if both parents are crested plants. Also are the crested traits of the mother more likely to show in the offspring than the traits of a crested father. This is an area that I have never totally understood. I really should do some reading about genetics. Cheers Got

Snowfella Posted November 3, 2012 Very nice Snowfella have they flowerd yet? Got Just the one sofar unfortunately, had very up and down weather in the Sydney area lately and it just doesn't get warm enough for any extended period of time. Last year out wild weather swings made 90% of them abort their buds on me. G. platense in bloom the other day....not 100% sure about the ID though Here's a couple of others just for good measure. G. baldianum...just won't perk up this spring though the wrinkes gives it some character. Tiny G. horstii or G. buenekeri....fat as can be! G. gotnoclue...love the spines though
Stillman Posted November 3, 2012 (edited) couple flowers from today Gymnocalycium anisitsi Gymnocalycium leeanum var. netrelianum looks similar to your platense? and my big freak baldianum which I keep using as the father in my crosses not quite a flower yet but soon little mihanovichii/ friedrichii cv rubra on own roots about to bloom Edited November 3, 2012 by Stillman
GoOnThen Posted November 3, 2012 Snowfella our weather is all over the place as well it is actually pissing down at the moment. All of my Gymno's are still in my shed under lights so they are flowering but they struggle to open fully. I hope your buds hang in there this year and give you some flowers. Your G. baldianum does look a bit flat even though it has a bud on it I would probably have a look at its roots if it doesn't improve soon. The G. horstii is incredibly fat and healthy looking it certainly is very happy . Stillman you must be getting flowers constantly at the moment have they set any seeds yet ? This little one has decided to start flowereing. The mum and all the pups are getting 5+ flowers each i dont know how it expects to support them all edit: actually it is quite peculiar it throws flower buds and then pups follow behind them. strange plant It is a bit of a strange one it will be interesting to see what it looks like during and after it flowers. Cheers Got
Stillman Posted November 3, 2012 Looks like I have 4 or so pods forming on various cross attempts, will have to wait a bit to see if they don't fall off.
Snowfella Posted November 3, 2012 It's acctually starting to perk up somewhat now, that photo is a week or so old and the collection had only had 2 light waterings..plus that plant stupidly enough had been put in the wrong spot on the bench and geting full sun. Gave them a deeper soak the other day and it's plumping up now and that iffy colour down the bottom is fading with the shadier spot.

mutant Posted November 11, 2012 GOT Wow They look really healthy. How big are the bottom ones Mutant ? Hey didn't answer this one. About my big saglione's. The biggest is around 20 cm [diameter]. The other ones, which are catching up in size were bought at about 10 cm. They grow fast! by far the fastest than any gymno I have seen - not that I have some great experience. G.saglione is known to be the biggest gymno I think. And by the looks of it, they like pan pots. The seller I got those had some at with 40-45 cm main head, which were clumping. Didnt ask for the price though.
