Easter and dogs don't mix.

Recommended Posts

Just a reminder to dog owners out there.....Easter Eggs and Dogs are not a good combination. As we know chocolate is toxic to dogs (so i better not be a dog in my next life) . I know dark chocolate is the worst, but any chocolate is bad for dogs. (i haven't researched the ifs and buts ). ....

Anyway.........

Miss 10 had a 100 gram milk chocolate Easter Rabbit that she was given by her Aunt. I warned her, and kept reminding her not to leave it laying around, as Buddy the Jack Russell will get it. Later on... we found foil remnants of her rabbit on her bed !!!!!!... Panic stations !!!! Bloody dog. Of course its after hours and no vets are immediately available. I remembered a friend telling me what she did when her dog ate dark chocolate...so i rang her, and took Buddy over to her house ( 5kms away). With much effort and distress we got a few 'Lectric Soda crystals' down the dogs throat, and within a few minutes, Buddy was ralphing up lots of gooey chocolate. Pheww..!!! Lucky i had a towel for him to chuck on as it was a slimey brown mess. It would have been hard to clean out of her pebble path. So hopefully he will be alright. ?. Stupido dog.

So yeah... If you have Easter eggs / chocolate,... Make sure your dog doesn't end up with them.

:)

By the way.. Happy Easter . Go eat some chocolate and don't share it with your pooch.

should be ok if you made it puke most of it out milk chocolate is hardly even deadly to dogs im sure i heard somewhere that they have to eat shit loads of that to get any kind of poisoning effect

now dark chocolate on the other had is very bad only like a little tiny bit can kill them

I hope all is ok with your dog

I didnt have time to sit on-line and research how much is takes to kill a dog, and didnt want to take any chances. I feel releived that he vomited it up, even if it was just milk chocolate. He is only a litte dog and it was a big bunny for him to pig out on. :)

I had a bull terrier he ate many easter eggs and lived to quite a ripe ole age of 4 years.. ate numerous pizza boxs ,once ate THC cookies discarded under a fruit tree to be so stoned he couldnt open his eyes and laid wasted under the tree, to be driven to the vet to awake upon arrival and the vet say look hes got the munchies when the vet gave him dog biscuits and milk to bring him too!

He managed to eat numerous buckets,& sticks to many to count, a lounge room of carpet by tearing up the whole carpet of a one bedroom unit from one single thread and chewing the foam underlay to reveal an inviting concrete slab, numerous dvd and tv remote controls, thank god for universal remotes, shoes constantly, washing from the clothesline until he matured, mobile phones 17 of these chewed up in total, over a period of four years.

Ate the front cars seats of my 79 toyota corona leaving the seats with spring metal to sit upon & then ate the steering wheel after he decided no more front seats to chew upon, as the front of the car was his, he presumed and was quite violently possessive of it.

He ate my mothers leather lounge suite to reveal the timber frame and tear up all the foam to leave one cushioned seat intact for himself and finally ate rat baits some dumb ass prior tenant left laying around in a new house I rented in south aust, destroying his kidneys and leading to his eventual demise...but he still waited all day for me to get home from work to look into my eyes to die in my arms and say gd bye...now thats a noble friend!

yeah died at 4 years of age no typo there...havnt been able to get another dog since he died just hasnt felt right his name was wilbur the pig....and he saved my life afew times in his short time also, as he was very protective and could sense evil intention from ppl like a sixth sense..but yes chocolate is very bad for dogs so are are onions apparently and corn on the cob also..not sure why but would be something interesting to research perhaps..hope yr little four legged friends makes a swift recovery also amazonian, as they become family theres no friend like a loyal dog!

reminds of a something else i read once not sure who said it..."i dont like cats cos they look down upon you, i dont like dogs cos they look up to you, but i like pigs as they treat you as an equal" Anyone whos ever gone pig hunting will know the meaning of that one!..

dogs are VERY slow to metabolise purine alkaloids such as caffeine and theobromine. Milk chocolate contains hardly any theobromine so is rarely a problem. Cocoa powder is the most dangerous domestic chocolate product as it has the highest concentration of theobromine - but dogs generally don't like the taste of it so it is rarely a problem. They tend to go for the fatty chocolate types so the more milk it has the more tasty it is to them and hence the less toxic.

Inducing vomiting is a good idea, but you usually have to do it quickly. Vets use dilute hydrogen peroxide solution. It frothes up in the stomach and makes them puke quickly. I've never heard of the lectric soda method so don't know how safe it is [although can't imagine it to be too dangerous]. But not many people have lectric soda lying around!!

I was waiting for you to tell us that you'd had enough and finally shot the bastard.

One of my mates had a bull terrier that ate a hole through the garage wall and got into the main bedroom, then he dug a hole in a brand new bed. He finally went mad and chased his tail 24/7 until he died of exhaustion.

I have a dog that carves a swathe of destruction every day, but I haven't got the heart to shoot him either. He's destroyed less than your mutt, he's not two yet so, he'll get there. He eats all my tomatoes, beans, figs and cucumbers and I can't dig a hole to plant anything without him doing some of his own excavation work. He's destroyed thousands of dollars worth of ethnos. I catch the fucking thing in the act and whoop his arse for it and all it does it make much more careful to make sure I don't catch him the next time. Sometimes when I whoop his arse he gets a horn which makes me wonder if he has some sick sadomasochist thing going on and he destroys shit just to his kicks when I punish him.

Other than that he's a fucking good dog.

My dog is fine this morning....running around hoping to get any chocolate crumbs. I spose i freaked out a bit, but i often think the worst will happen in cases like this.

Years ago I had a dog that would eat stuff like the contents of a handbag including lipstick and money. He also ate a bar of flea soap and had to spend a few days at the vet on a drip. The same dog would go through the rubbish bin and eat the plastic bags that had contained meat, and one day while i was walking him, he started to have a crap, and out comes this plastic bag all long and twisted and it had his feaces inside and out. It was hanging out about 12" and he couldn't get it all out. This is in the main street of the shopping center mind you, and he's swinging around and grinding his bum on the ground etc.. I had to get a stick and wrap it around the bag and help get the rest out. Things we do for our pets hey !! Chocolate anyone ?

:)

Glad your pooch is all good.

My old dog once got into one of those boxes full of easter eggs and other chocolates they give you in primary school too sell for charity. She ate the whole lot and ended up fine exept for the foil wrapped turds she was doing for a few days after

I wonder if some dogs are more sensitive to chocolate than others, like people are to substances?.

Anyway, my dog is fine. Thank goodness. He is a pretty smart dog hey, i taught him to beg, so now when he wants something, he sits in front of me and begs so perfectly. I ask him "what do you want?" and he runs to the back door, or his food bowl, but mostly he begs for the Laser pointer, lol, he runs to the shelf where it is kept, and looks up at it, and wants me to shine it up and down the hall way so he can run after it. He's awesome.

Thanks for your replies guys, i will be more at ease next time he sneaks some chocolate......and i know there will be a next time.....,If you have kids, you will have chocolate left laying around.

:)

Yeah Hill Billy, a little Jack. They are great dogs, the Jack Russell. Two of my previous dogs were Jack Russel crosses, and were great dogs too, so you kinda stick to a breed when you realize they are a good dog. You see it all the time, families that get the same breed of dog over and over again as they become fond of that breed. I have to say though, Border Collies and Kelpies are my favorite breed of dog (along with Jack Russell and Fox terriers). I am trying hard to be allowed to get another dog for Buddy to play with, and it will be a Border Collie :)
