THE Parish Priest of Pomeroy has stated that he expects explicit imagery which appeared at the beginning of a powerpoint presentation he was giving to parents of local primary school children will be “legitimately explained.”

Fr Martin McVeigh was setting up the presentation for parents of children preparing for their First Communion at St Mary’s Primary School when pornographic images appeared on the screen.

An eight-year-old boy is understood to have also been present in the room.

The incident happened on Monday night (March 26) in the primary school.

Thusrday’s Ulster Herald first revealed how the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) confirmed the incident is being investigating by the Child Protection Office of the Armagh Dioceses.

The Archdiocese of Armagh also confirmed that Cardinal Sean Brady was aware of the incident. Cardinal Brady stated, “On the evening of Monday, March 26, at a meeting of parents in a primary school in the Archdiocese of Armagh, inappropriate imagery was inadvertently shown by a priest at the beginning of a Powerpoint presentation, causing concern to those present. This was immediately removed from the screen.

'NO KNOWLEDGE'

“The priest has stated that he had no knowledge of the offending imagery. The Archdiocese immediately sought the advice of the PSNI who indicated that, on the basis of the evidence available, no crime had been committed.

“The priest is co-operating with an investigation of the matter on the part of the Archdiocese.”

Fr McVeigh has stated that he had no knowledge of the offending imagery.

Speaking to the ‘Herald, the Pomeroy priest said, “As the incident is being investigated, I wouldn’t be able to comment until the investigation is finished. Hopefully that will be soon. I don’t know how it happened but I know what happened.

“There are people making innuendoes who weren’t even there but in this day and age these stories grow.

"All I can do is let the incident be investigated and be open to that investigation so that what happened can be legitimately explained.”

This was reported in the TripleJ news yesterday morning, where the story was that he immediately fled the room when the images appeared...

EDIT: they also reported that the images were pornographic images of males...

The report I heard specifically stated "pornographic images of males"

Nudity is definitely NOT pornography - however society at large and the general media treat the 2 as interchangable.

It's a shame and evidnece of our pathetic sexual complex, for sure.

yeah, i think certain media outlets are running this line to create a little sensationalism. the BBC article which actually included quotes from people who were there simple stated that the images were of naked men. thats why i linked to this article, and not one more sensationally tinged.

Nudity is definitely NOT pornography

absolutely. i think in their haste to denigrate the catholic church (and create sensation) certain media outlets have run this line. however, all we really know is whats been reported in a handful of second hand news stories. the reality may or may not be different.

So were they all Brothers Bathing Beatifically or was it altogether more innocent, perhaps art of some sort?

I think the point is that the Catholic Church sets (and militantly imposes) unreasonable standards for its subscribers (that even its most dedicated supporters can't uphold). The issue of what should be considered pornography is marginal.
