I wasn't sure if the ones on ebay would be actually Tasmanian Purple. Since the strain is from Tasmania and the ones from ebay come from the USA. I'd trust a local seller more.

Try the supermarket! The ones for baking are the tassie strain.

As far as I'm aware the high thebaine poppies seed is not sold?

They spent alot of money developing the strain & they are not likely to give it away.

The supermarket Tas are the high morphine variety, I believe.

Only the morph hit the food market, others are destroyed due to safety - and more importantly

protection of other strain lines getting into competitors hands.

Hit a baker up if you know one....

PS - cannot tell them apart if staring at them from the roadside

Although Taz Alcaloids states on their website that the Norman strain is not sold as poppy seed, i'm not certain that a very few don't get mixed in by accident.

i've heard that the high thebain Norman strain have more hairs/spines on the stem than the morphine producing variety, so if you grow a bunch ov Tazzies & one or two look significantly different in that respect, then it's probably best to leave them.

Yellow Mellow specifically state their poppy seed are from Australia so those are definitely Tazzies.

I suppose it is also worth noting the Tassies are bred for high yield in Tassie conditions and soil types.....

I still think the allure of that distant place (particularly internationally) drives demand. Poppy varieties from the third world when given cutting edge agronomy/horticulture seriously pick up alkaloid content.....

The control involved in tracking crops from paddock through processing is incredible. Every crop gets analysed for alkaloid content (sometimes across soil types within paddocks), and this in turn improves agronomy. This is especially for Tasmanian Alkaloids crops (which have the exclusive norman line), BTW there are three processing companies in the game.

Be stuffed if I can tell the difference visually, I do somewhat believe Normans smell slightly different when baked in sun, but I wouldn't bet my nuts on it (confirmed normans). When they are grown on the hectare basis you can distinctively smell poppies from quite a distance.

The seeds coming into a bakery I used to work at came in a 15kg bag labeled 'Tasmanian Blue Poppy'.

Interesting haven't seen a blue one? - generally puple/lilac, they revert to red when the go weedy on roadsides.

There are paid hit squads to remove the weedy ones...

The blue they are refering to is the colour of the seed.
