Great doco on cryptic mystery tiles

Recommended Posts

I just watched this doco... Id never heard of the Toynbee tiles before but its most fascinating watching the mystery unravel over a decade.

has anyone heard of this before? its amazing and elaborate.

The Toynbee tiles (also called Toynbee plaques) are messages of mysterious origin found embedded in asphalt of streets in about two dozen major cities in the United States and four South American capitals.[1][2] Since the 1980s, several hundred tiles have been discovered. They are generally about the size of an American license plate, but sometimes considerably larger. They contain some variation on the following inscription:

TOYNBEE IDEA

IN Kubrick's 2001

RESURRECT DEAD

ON PLANET JUPITER.

Some of the more elaborate tiles also feature cryptic political statements or exhort readers to create and install similar tiles of their own. The material used for making the tiles was long a mystery, but evidence has emerged that they may be primarily made of layers of linoleum and asphalt crack-filling compound.

Articles about the tiles began appearing in the mid-1990s, though references may have started to appear in the mid-1980s

thats from wikipedia

Did abit of reading on this... it's interesting how many connections can be made between Toynbee, jupiter and 2001. It's like someone picked a few words that interconnect on many different levels

Yeah I'd never even heard mention of this before.. the doco is great, the way he finds chance leads up to the conclusion was most entertaining.

Like you said, the connections were trippy. It at first seemed preposterous that anyone else would have put together similar words or ideas, but it kept turning up.
