dosileflynn Posted December 19, 2011 (edited) Hi guys! so i have recently been extremely lucky to have been gifted a healthy looking peyote specimen. i am not sure on it's exact genus and species, i would blindly guess it to be a Lophophora Williamsii. i was wondering if peyote is similar to other cacti in that it is well suited to a 50/50 cacti & succulents/perlite mix?? obviously it needs to be planted into a larger pot. what i am unsure of is how often it should be watered? (i am really worried about damaging the plant) what fertilizers and frequency it can tolerate?? and also how much sunlight it shold be given?? dionysus Posted December 19, 2011 looks to be a lophophora willamsii var caespitosa the pottinx mix you described should suffice, but i would personally add an equal part coarse sand for a bit better drainage and a little bit of crushed lime never goes a stray for added celcium, loph's are said to benefit from celcium. loph's shouldn't be watered through the cooler dormant months and watered when needed in the warmer months, waiting for the soil to fully dry and then a couple extra days before watering again. i have used a variety of low nitrogen liquid fertilizers in half strength dilution with no damage, approx. once a month in summer. low nitrogen is key, though. in the wild, loph's tend to grow around the base or under the folliage of slightly larger shrubs so a well lit area where the cacti recieves diffuse light for the afternoon and full sun for the morning is somewhat ideal. good luck, a nice plant you have,
