☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted May 29, 2014 (edited) Hey C_T, I've never really had much problem with terra cotta, even when sitting on concrete or brick, and that is how I've grown my plants for 20+ years and well, do they look ok? In the photo above they are just acclimatizing in the driveway, but they will eventually sit around the homestead on concrete or brick. I'm certainly not providing ideal growing conditions, but my goal is pretty plants, and not maximum growth. As for using terra cotta, well I know a lot of people regard it as inferior to plastic, but I use it primarily because of my temperate environment where I get quite a bit of rain throughout the growing season. The second advantage for me is that I can bring even wet plants into the garage at the end of the season and simply put a fan in there to help dry the soil as the clay is more pourous. I suspect that with plastic I wouldn't be able to get the soil to dry nearly as quick and I would get more root rot. But I think clay is pretty and I like the natural feel of it, plus cacti and plastic just seem like they should never touch each other. ~Michael~ I was always told that plastic was inferior to clay , and it is in many ways , there's just the practicalities going for it, like when the plant isnt stationary... and lack of accidental shattering they still scratch windowsills though , but not as bad, I still grow my best loph in terracotta, it loves it Edited May 29, 2014 by ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ
djmattz0r Posted May 29, 2014 (edited) where are the pics of ss01, ss02, ss03 & ss04? musta missed them...... I had an SS02 previously, but got one of each from my sacred succulents order a few weeks back. For anyone who doesn't know the sacred succulent named clones: SS01 = peruvianoid SS02 = bridgesioid with 2 main spines per aerole SS03 = T. Knuthians SS04 = T. Chalaensis Had one of those awesome days where you get to unwrap a package full of cacti This is what I got from SS, can't wait for things to root so I can plant em in the ground. Not shown is several thousand seeds of 30+ tricho hybrids IMG_20140502_184753.jpg Got the ones with roots planted into temporary containers IMG_20140502_195947.jpg Put the unrooted cuttings into empty pots to get some indirect light under a table while rooting, I'll probably put them into something better to root this is just a temporary solution. IMG_20140502_200026.jpg Which reminds me, was checking for roots and the first one I pulled had some awesome ones starting so I potted it. Checked the rest of them and sure enough... nothing T. hostilis Posted May 31, 2014 I went to home depot yesterday and was very happy. Found a TON of plants I've been looking for and some grafting stock. I couldn't take all of them, but i got 30 dollars worth. 2 Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubrispinus. Awesome purple spines, but the shitty strawflower that was attacked to it pulled them off. But I told the clerk and got 50% off so they were only $1.50 each. 2 T. pachanoi "PC" for grafting 3 M. geometrizans for grafting stock. They also had some astrophytum, some awesome opuntias, some giant crested lobvias that were flowering. It was pretty cool. OMG They had these ugly ass spray painted M. gracilis fragilis plants with a big sign next tto them that said. "COSMIC CACTUS! OUT OF THIS WORLD COLORED CACTI" I'll take a picture of it next time I'm there. It was just too awesome, but yet it made me want to cry at the same time.

djmattz0r Posted June 1, 2014 hostilis those kosmic kaktus are the most terrible thing, I think I posted earlier in this thread with a few pictures when I first saw them nice scores btw, it's always nice to rescue some plants from the big box stores. Put some of my large cuttings outside in turface to root, here's a picture of the group. I still have a few indoors waiting for room outside I also chopped up my Rosei because it wasn't getting better after starting to rot in the package during 2+ months of shipping so in a desperate attempt to salvage the genetics I made a bunch of large aerole grafts. I hope I didn't wait too long, I usually have poor success grafting things that have already begun to rot There's 6 grafts so hopefully luck and statistics pull through and I end up with at least one success I was also checking on my Echinopsis subdenudata last night trying to get some flower pictures and I spotted this little guy, I wanted to catch him but decided to let him do his own thing. Hopefully he survives once it gets warmer, already 90+ days.
hostilis Posted June 1, 2014 Found 4 more 12" T. pachanoi at a different home depot today. I talked them down from $40 to $20 by using a bunch of confusing cactus lingo and making them think they were faulty cacti. Lol.

Snowfella Posted June 1, 2014 Hostilis: sure those are rubrispinus? Look so much paler in colour to mine and more in line with "regular" rigidissimus.Got my fingers crossed for some flowers on the Trich's in that bed come spring, peru and bridgesii are still way to small but the pach and scoup could possibly flower this year.Main stem on the pach is a good 5 to 6 foot now so it's big enough for sure, just the scoup that's borderline but it doubled in size over summer.

I was originally trying to graft onto the inner flesh of the vascular core and make horizontal grafts but some pieces were definitely more along the lines of aerole grafts. I would bring them inside except I worry that my cat will mess with them like she always does. I also think they would dry more rapidly inside possibly causing more to fail? I don't have high hopes already because of the state of decomposition the cutting was in when I started making grafts but <fingers crossed> I will bring a couple inside and see if they do any better
