Inyan Posted November 16, 2017 Today I admired a few more variegated seedlings I think are finally large enough to share pictures of.is nice enough. This one is still improving I'm hoping as her softer colors don't appeal to me as much personally. And this little joker if it is going to be worthwhile is probably going to have to have a nice sport selected from it as the variegation is not only light, but it is sparse . So, as you can see, i basically admired my cacti today and looked for any tell tale signs of variegation that might be missed or at least decent enough to comment on. Dusted my cacti as well. Looks like white powder exploded everywhere now in the green house. Ah, and my favorite, I noticed this little guy starting to grow. along with one of his siblings As I grafted 100% of the seedlings from that last cross... you can tell I'm hoping for something spectacular from it. I'm just tickled pink to see Huarazensis x Zelly 3 grafts starting to take off.
Crop Posted November 19, 2017 Iv'e never tried cactus in aquaponics so I thought i'd give it a go. Started with a rooted dragon fruit and a Peres cutting. This beds are fed from a red claw crayfish tank, which I think should have a better nutrient profile for cactus, but I'm still worried the nitrates might be too high. I planted lots of cutting of Okinawan Spinich and Aibika in an attempt to soak up the excess nitrates. Have to see how it goes.
Inyan Posted November 19, 2017 I frequently grow in bog-ponics. If you look to the left of the answer to everything grafts you can see about 2 inches of water that I let my grafts sit in. That picture was taken today. Along with this picture of two variegates... one never seen before, all grown by seed.

Hey man, if (and prolly WHEN) those tags fade, try a lead pencil. HB or softer is fine. I like to cut up an old plastic plant pot, preferably a brightly coloured one (pink or orange), and then give it a light sand with fine grit sandpaper. Lasts for YEARS, due to UV stabilisation. Even if buried and dirty they are still readable years later. Best thing is they're free, and even reusable if cleaned up with sandpaper again Your daughter certainly has better handwriting than most in the plant game LOL Edited November 20, 2017 by Halcyon Daze
Inyan Posted November 20, 2017 3 hours ago, Crop said: Hi Inyan, what is bog-ponics? Is it using greywater?Do you have any problem with grafts spliting due to excess nitrates? I don't use heavy nitrates as a general rule. Heavy P-K yes, but for nitrates I tend to rely on dilute fish emulsion and blood meal. Blood meal I work into the soil along with bone meal. I've been growing my Trichocereus this way with no ill effects other than one of my grafts has aerial roots. Still, its nothing I can point my finger at and say that the bog-ponics did it. I allow the water to rise up enough that you can see the water on the soil my Pereskiopsis grafts are in when it is at its highest point. I have trays that many of my other grafts sit in with the same and the main problem I have had is with the algae that grows in the smaller containers where the grafts are moved less frequently. My soil stays perpetually wet if not drenched this way as sometimes I'll forget and let the water drop down to just a few centimeters of depth. Another reason I keep 5 gallon containers of water in my green house is to quickly top up those trays that hold the water for my cacti. Suffice it to say my Trichocereus on their own roots are in much taller containers so they have considerably less water hitting their containers on a consistent basis. I have too many grafts right now to keep them all in this bog-ponics system without doing some construction work or buying some more perfectly shaped containers, but yes... it does seem to work great for those that I can keep growing that way. I did have one panic attack when I first started growing this way and that happened because my Pereskiopsis actually started to shrivel a bit in the water after some time of being placed in the water. I took them all out of the water and let them dry out for a bit and then tried again. I haven't had the issue again since then. I suspect it had to do with getting used to being in so much water all the time. A period of adjustment was needed would be my guess.
Inyan Posted November 20, 2017 Here are a few more pictures taken today to show my bog-ponics. Water is a little low today, but you can see the algae growth and the water line. I removed some growths from some of my grafts and noticed some of my favorites have started to take off. Huarazensis (pachanoi) 50%, Scopulicola 25% and 25% red grandi... what is not to love with this hybrid? That is why I grafted 100% of what sprouted for me from that cross. Another one I grafted 100% of the seedlings that sprouted, Peru Clyde x Zelly5. As you can see, they are starting to pop as well. Spent a few hours making sure all these grafts in particular looked okay today. And QuatroThunderCat is looking good as well. This little girl definitely has something else going on.You can make out a faint line going through her midsection making me think she is perhaps not a true quatrocotyledon, but perhaps a conjoined twin. Natures graft in a seedling. I find it nice that even mother nature appears to want to help me graft.

Gimli Posted November 26, 2017 Moved 10 cuzco columns out the back and then counted all new pups from this season so far: 33 While I was out in the garden, I got to thinking (and I couldn't find it in search) - will a cactus pup regardless if it can sustain it or not ? A few cuzco columns have 5 pups with 6th just starting to break through... where does it end and should I cut off the smallest ones and let it keep growing 3?
Inyan Posted November 26, 2017 Many of my seedlings less than 3 cm in growth have multiple pups. Don't sweat it. IF you want to speed up the pups growth graft them or keep them on the same cacti. If you simply remove them you will slow their growth.
aguacolla Posted November 27, 2017 My first trich cuttings are finally starting to root... It's my first time growing them so I was heaps impatient and kept changing things in an effort to speed them up- more moisture, more perlite, more sun blah blah.. which just let to problems. They just needed warm air and time.
Gimli Posted December 2, 2017 After a few days of travel, I came home to do some washing before embarking on another few days of travel down south to a town called Esperance. Sitting on the table was a package from a VERY generous member!! Inside it was this loph... Some weird PC thing Scop x Super Pedro startingto pup due to BAP. Hopefully I didn't go overboard with it. Cuzco going for a 5th pup...

Inyan Posted December 8, 2017 Have you tried fertilizer. I just went out after giving my little T. validus x Red Grandi hybrid a little fertilizer and notices she was trying to push a pup out already.

More than the bag recommended. Think its 6-1-1 or something. It's pup and growth spurt city out there I've read that a lot of nitrogen isn't good for cactus though? Seems to be doing great... DualWieldRake Posted December 13, 2017 (edited) I doubt nitrogen is bad for a cactus. Just reading about how pachycereus pringlei grows amongst legumes, with their nitrogen fixing magic.. I've heard some people say it makes them vulnerable against bugs, i doubt that. In potato farming i believe they might cut down on N to keep pests in check but i think this only works against a feeding population, slowing down the reproduction speed with the plant making less nutrients for them. On a small scale cactus operation i would reckon there might be more effective ways (aka destroying pests) Edited December 13, 2017 by DualWieldRake

I daren't feed indoors in winter and I guess they're supposed to be dormant? but did do on the column validus I have last season.. that tip I have posted recently was from the same plant but i lost it bidding at the time I won the column in april .. then found it later from another seller and was the only bidder :3 but certainly will be doing the feedwell when it warms up .. with rock fertz that i only just discovered how cool are; at the tail end of last season.. and probably tomato feed but yeah a little nitro does make puppage so I will try that too.. maybe even a little piss which worked really well on a peru and a scop last season. Condor man Posted December 14, 2017 (edited) I sometimes pee on the ground around my outdoor cacti in growth season. Only a few times a year but they grow like mad. I put it down to the nitrogen. I've also heard that nitrogen is only ever taken-up by a plant's roots and applying nitrogen to leaves just burns them.
