What did you do to your cacti today?

Recommended Posts

For grafting/seedlings I use the long cfl fixtures it makes for more efficiency in my spacing.

If you want best growth with that cfl fixture i'd check out a 80w cfl by phillips better than those 130w+ jobs imo.

otherwise just pick one up from bunnings a cool white one will still be good for starting seeds

Thanks! I'll only be using it for starting seeds for the time being.

i really like your cactus TH. very nice indeed!

why?

cuz the rot was travelling down the column, had one last year that did the same and it rotted the whole plant.

what would you have done mate?

Hey Pim, that plant looks a lot like a Thelegonus and not a Tacaquirensis. Might be worth looking into at least....

i reckon he wouldve left the black rot ...

and ive been doing sometimes too since learning it from him..

and now I hardly ever see it..

if it get it rlly bad I have operated in the past ..

but I ignore it more often now

and maybe will add an alcohol handwash gel and sulphur "scab" over it as a preventative to save going under the knife

and plenny of air /dryness wherever possible

Generally ignored them, the whole collection has seen abit of neglect of late unfortunately.

Monster in the making? Finally started putting on some height rather than just get fat, 10 inches tall and between 6-7 inches in diameter. Doubled it's rib count over summer.

DSC05164_zps5ox3rvjn.jpg

Likely a victim for some pruning come spring, getting way to spread out to safely reside in a pool area.

I recently bought a clip on wide angle, macro and fish eye lenses from China. Only $4.69 !!! seems to do a pretty good job. Here's a few grafts.

Hey Snowfella does that M.geometrizans flower and fruit? Pretty rare to see such a big specimen in a collection

Did some cuttings. I cut 3 penis-pups from my own roots TBMCrests and also took cuttings from my two TBMC grafts. I had to slice my weird-shaped big graft (not the one depicted) in more parts so as to maintain an areole in the graft. ALso took cuttings from myrtillocactus crest (non geometrizans) and myrtillocactus breast . Most of the geometrizans crest wax are about to root too...

P1130597.jpg P1130628.jpg

Potted some newly rooted specimens , PsychoO, a pachanoi X (nook/otto) , echinopsis crest and myrti crest, and couple loph's other pic on the right is the previous batch of the lophos that rooted.. They all come from a caespitosa graft on pachanoi which rotted but this time I made it in time and took dozens of pups/cuttings.. Most lophos become more rot prone and more sensitive skined when grafted and especially in caepitosa specimens grafted where the overupping created cavities and overhead watering could cause rot when not in the hot period.

I greatly suggest grafting and taking pups off grafts as a means to propagate lophos for pleazure or trading. The rooting time is not bad at all.

P1130598.jpg P1130599.jpg

Also took some other shots but I will post them up in the appropriate threads...

Hey Snowfella does that M.geometrizans flower and fruit?

Dunno about Snowfella's plant, my myrt geo flowers & fruits (self fertile), however the fruits are a bit of a surprise......a little tiny blue berry that is actually quite tasty, but no seeds inside !!! Fruits can take several weeks to ripen.

Unfortunately not, though I have high hopes it should start setting flowers soon as it's big enough.

As to size, it was a tiny little seedgrown thing when I put it in the ground 5 odd years ago, since then it's been left to grow hardly without any help from me.
