I was wrong about pit bulls

Recommended Posts

A few years back I ran into a row of houses in Katherine, NT where they had what I thought was a huge pitbull/mastiff cross. Turns out it was infact three of these guys:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogo_argentino

And even then, these pictures dont do it justice. There were three of them in the backyards of a row odf maybe six houses i was running past.

These dogs have a head the size of a wombat and a body built like a small horse. The thing was up to my nipples standing and it wanted to kill me - if it got out I would ahve been dead. its head was bigger than a mans.

you sure they were not Presa Canarios?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perro_de_Presa_Canario

Where i live everyone seems to have pitbulls, as if the city hands them out when people move here

news reports abound of people being bitten by them, just because there are so many of them

they are kind of trash dogs for trash people in a way

great dogs for lowlifes, but not good for families or people who aren't scumbags

I should know, i have at least 10 friends with them... all of those friends are trashy violent macho types, usually drunk or high

they all love their pitbulls, and fighting in the street

If breed for specific purpose and not in that context with its human master, a dog that escapes from a yard can join a pack[ 2 more dogs and roam around like wolves or how they were bred to do or both.

http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Vicious-pit-bull-attack-called-worst-in-years-2139318.php

Two of three pit bulls that viciously attacked a 58-year-old woman as she walked along a narrow city street early Monday morning have been euthanized and their young owner could face jail time, according to authorities and the city attorney.

The owner, who authorities identified as 21-year-old Jasmine Tirado, told police she had the animals inside a gate that someone opened. She has been cited for a dangerous dog violation under a the city ordinance. If found guilty of that violation, the dog owner could be jailed or fined or both, said city attorney, L. John Van Norden. He said he has asked the police department for a more "extensive investigation" into the matter, which will then be reviewed by his office to determine the severity of local charges Tirado may face.

She could potentially face a total of nine charges: three counts each of having an unlicensed dog, having a loose dog, and having a dangerous dog, Van Norden explained.

Commercial restrictions

[edit] Liability insurance

Dog owners in the United States can be held legally liable for injuries inflicted or caused by their dogs. In general, owners are considered liable if they were unreasonably careless in handling or restraining the dog, or if they knew beforehand that the dog had a tendency to cause injury (e.g., bite); however, dog owners are automatically considered liable if local laws hold an owner strictly liable for all damage caused by their dog, regardless of carelessness or foreknowledge of a dog's tendencies. Homeowners and renters insurance policies typically provide liability coverage from US$100,000–300,000 for injuries inflicted by dogs;[53] however, some insurance companies limit their exposure to dog bite liability claims by putting restrictions on dog owners that they insure. These restrictions include refusing to cover dog bites under the insurance policy; increasing insurance rates for homeowners with specific breeds; requiring owners of specific breeds to take special training or have their dogs pass the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test;[54] requiring owners to restrict their dogs with muzzles, chains, or enclosures; and refusing to write policies for homeowners or renters who have specific breeds of dogs.[53] In Ohio, which has declared all pit bull-type dogs to be legally "vicious",[55] the cost of special liability insurance that covers only the damage inflicted by a pit bull-type dog can exceed US$575 per year.[56]

Owners of rental properties may also be held liable if they knew an aggressive dog was living on their property and they did nothing to ensure the safety of other tenants at the property; as a result, many rental properties forbid pit bull-type dogs and any other breeds if the rental property's insurance will not cover damage inflicted by that type of dog. The dog breeds most often targeted by insurance companies include pit bull-type dogs, Rottweilers, German Shepherd Dogs, Doberman Pinschers, Akitas (Akita Inu and American Akita), and Chows.[57]

------------------------------------------------------------------

I have persinally seen the results of 3 rottwieller on 2 sheep, and wasn't pretty.

[The Clifton study of attacks from 1982 through 2006 produced similar results. According to Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes were responsible for 65% of the canine homicides that occurred during a period of 24 years in the USA. (Clifton, Dog attack deaths and maimings, U.S. & Canada, September 1982 to November 13, 2006; click here to read it.)

i used to look after my mates dogo when he went on holidays to japan and like any other dog it depends on the owner his dog (patch) was a beautiful natured dog. patch now lives in japan and enjoys a very spoilt life.

i think the so called dangerous dog breeds atract certain types of people who give them a bad name by makin them visious and/or neglecting them.

this business about banning/euthanising dogs reminds me of hysteria around shark attacks. if someone gets attacked all of a sudden theres a "killer shark" roaming the waters and needs to be killed because it "has a taste for blood now" (lol like thats unusual for a shark), and people just start hunting sharks. completely pointless and won't change a damn thing.

I dont actually always blame the owners. Most of a dogs behaviours and reactions to things are pretty ingrained by 12 months of age so if you inherit a dog from a pound at 14 months like my mate did, all the training the world is gonna be needed to stop it being so fearful and aggressive to other dogs (who it obviously was never exposed to) - a blue healer in this case.

that being said, your right - the people that tend to want these dogs are either dead shits who couldnt organise a root in a brothel or people with limited time, who just keep the dog in its enclosure barking all day until it eventually gets out and kills the golden retriever down the road. (like happened near us in the northern suburbs).

if a maltese has a bad day you get a nip on your toe. If a dogo argentino has a bad day you get your face ripped off...

Best for oldies and the best Burglar detector ever made.

But there another one [toy dog]that looks like a small fox, very much better tempered and doesn't bark even in a car at the supermarket.

Very popular

http://www.petplace.com/dog-breeds/pomeranian.aspx

Pomeranian

Pomeranian If you are looking for a spunky little dog with a big personality, look no further. Throughout history, the Pomeranian has been a tiny companion for royalty and common folk alike. With a happy pleasant nature, this mini puffball has a vast number of admirers.

History and Origin

The Pomeranian is thought to have descended from the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland. The breed is the smallest of the group of dogs known as "spitz-type" dogs. Originally, the larger version of the Pomeranian was an able herder. Eventually, it was brought to the country of Pomerania, located on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea, and it was here that many believe the breed was originally bred down in size and received the name "Pomeranian."

Until the late 1880s, the breed was not well known but, like many other breeds, Queen Victoria took an interest and their popularity soared. The queen is actually credited for encouraging breeders to continue the process of developing smaller and smaller dogs. As proof of her love for the breed, Queen Victoria requested that her beloved Pomeranian "Turi" be present with her at her death.

Appearance and Size

The Pomeranian, a tiny dog standing around 12 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 3 to 7 pounds, looks just like a tiny fox. The hair coat is fluffy and abundant, composed of a soft dense undercoat and a harsh textured outer coat. Their tail is set high and lays on the back, and the ears are pointed, triangular and erect. The Pomeranian is available in a variety of solid colors as well as brindle and combinations of colors.

Personality

Docile and sturdy, the Pomeranian is an active breed, known for having a big personality in a little package. The breed does well in an apartment setting as long as there is plenty to do. The breed does well either as the only dog in the house or with other dogs. If you have more than one Pomeranian, noise may become a factor. The breed tends to be quite vocal, especially when in groups.

Home and Family Relations

The Pomeranian makes a great pet and companion, especially for older children and adults. Because the Pomeranian is so small, the dog could be accidentally injured by very young children.

Since the breed is vocal and usually wary of strangers, they make great watchdogs but really don't have the size to carry through on their verbal threats.

Training

The Pomeranian is an intelligent dog and learns quickly. Many can be taught various tricks. The breed requires lots of activity to keep him out of trouble.

Special Concerns

Some unscrupulous breeders have not paid attention to the dog's temperament, and consequently some Pomeranians may become aggressive. The breed is very curious and needs plenty of mental stimulation to prevent behavioral problems and destructive actions. The hair coat requires daily grooming to prevent the development of mats and tangles.

Sharks eat meat and fighting/hunting dogs, it is their nature to do so.

recent t.v shows have showed people swimming with all forms of shark(tiger, blue, great white etc etc.) but they make no mistake in saying it could all go nasty in the right/wrong situation, but when it comes to fighting dogs mans arrogance makes him/her think they can control what is basically a dog bred to be a soldier, assasin, bodyguard, fighter, hunter with a do or die instinct loyal to few.

my problem is that the owners of these dogs deny that it "is" an animal that "was" designed to be aggressive. sure you can pamper and treat them well but instinct is undeniable and in the right/wrong situation the dog is at danger of reverting, yet because "poochie" wouldn't hurt a flea and plays with "my" kids they dont supervise it responsibly.

thanx to Zen for starting this thread it's been an eye opener to research what breeds have been used to engineer these "fighting/hunting" dogs.

oh and personally i really like the japanese Tosa.

they are beautiful dogs you have to admit. i had a mastiff x pitbull (desexed) not a kinder more gentle dog.

my friend has a red-nosed pitbull. again a loving and sweet dog. not so good with other dogs though. IMO 9/10 times its not the dog thats the problem, its the owner.

rottweillers and german shepherds went through the same phase, being seen as "the tough guys dog" so every tough guy wannabee went out and bought one. generally speaking these "tough guy wannabees" are not the most intelligent of person, henceforth the dog, and the breed suffers. not to mention innocent people and critters.

i really think getting a dog license should be ALOT stricter. i think obedience training should be mandatory, and fines for not keeping a dog securely housed with adequate weather protection alot higher.

to many fuckwits own dogs.

I had one as a kid in texas[ hot place but didn't bother the dog], maybe in australia outback to.

Got hit by a car [unknown] but didn't run off from a kid [me].

Called snowball, miss that dog.

See him in heaven I think.

So have to mention a good kids dog.

Robo0 d0g [alias AlphaDog],

brought to you the U.S militray establishmemnt. But wheres the teeth and the bark.

http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-10-boston-dynamics-unwraps-military-robot.html

[(PhysOrg.com) -- Boston Dynamics has taken the wraps off its newest prototype combat escort, AlphaDog, which was developed with funding from DARPA and the US Marine Corps. Waltham, Massachusetts-based Boston Dynamics last week revealed the video that shows AlphaDog's capabilities for troop support. Those who have seen the video are calling the quadruped robot such names as Mule Poodle, Monster Mutt and BigDog-on-Steroids, but AlphaDog is its name. The robot is described further as the prototype for the formally named LS3. The latter stands for Legged Squad Support System.

The robot, once fully ready for combat, will navigate through any rough terrain conditions, and will carry 400 pounds of equipment for 20 miles without having to refuel. ]

An extremely rare albino alligato

The three-year-old is the first of its kind ever to go on exhibition at the National Aquarium, home to more than 200 marine species from goldfish and frogs to pirahnas and sharks.

"There are less than 100 albino alligators in the world," Ryan Dumas, a herpetologist (amphibian and reptile expert) at the tourist attraction, told AFP on Thursday. "They are very rare."

Hatched in captivity in Cut Off, Louisiana after its egg was found in the wild, the ghost-like alligator with pink eyes came to Washington via the privately-owned Saint Augustine Alligator Farm in Florida.

"Local lore (in parts of Louisiana) is that it's incredible good luck to see an albino alligator," Dumas said, adding however that because of their color, few if any survive in the wild.

"A white alligator is going to have a very hard time keeping itself hidden in a dark swamp," said Dumas, because the lack of camouflage exposes hatchlings to predators or gives them away to prey.

The alligator, which dines on fish and rodents, will be on show from Friday until February next year, by which time -- through a Facebook campaign to be launched by the aq

i was at the park the other day with my daughter and my per hate is these well meaning drongos who think their dog is innocent types...........i thought there was a law against that, having leashes on suspect dogs, anyway it was a old lady with a HUGE alsation. the dog would have been the size of my daughter........it came bounding up to my daughter and i was gonna kick shit out of it to go away fast, im very protective obviously and i swear if any animal touches her especially a dog i would literally twist its head off in front of the owner.

anyway this stupid lady goes blah blah blah its gentle and so on, i said lady put a lead on your dog or go somewhere else i dont trust dogs and my daughter was bitten when she was young, cant you tell she is shivering behind my legs and you have one of the worst e types of violent dogs going around, she said na na not my precious little atta (dogs name). to my incredible suprise she produced a hand reciever which had an electric shock collar attached remotely to the dog, she said it was impossible for the dog to attack because she just zaps it..............look, so she zaps it and the dog became subserviant, then she said the only thing that gets her dog fired up is when kids are afraid....atta thinks its a game and might nip a bit. by this stage i made do with the pleasantries as i was actually getting quite fired up and was going to tell her she is a stupid bitch and fuck off to a dog beach or something, but i kept it civil and put my daughter on my shoulders to keep her safe......................and then atta the dog went running for its life, it went and attacked some other dog with its owner (doing the correct thing with a leash too) the old lady was screaming ATTA ATTA and pressing her magic shock collar over and over and her collar did jack shit, the last i saw there was a heated exchange between the stupid old lady and her stupid misbehaving dog and i felt quite justified in my first impression......dogs are unpredictable and if they draw a drop of blood from one human being they should be killed immediately.

"ATTA!" "ATTA!",.... hahahaha!

I like dogs allot. The island where I live,... most people dont know how to treat dogs.

Many people just let their dogs walk in and out of the yard ( in the poorer neighbourhoods)

Or just have them on a leash for most of their life just as guard (alarm)dogs.

Even on this small island there has been an incident with the so called fighting breeds to have attacked a kid walking by on the street.

A friend om mine had a big pitbull who would growl at you if you didnt pet him long enough. This dog would size you up immediately and you'd either be it's bitch or it's pal.

If his dog looked at you, you would feel like it was looking at you as an intruder or as a piece of prey. The dogs name was "GROX!"
