Bush Turkey Posted September 1, 2011 hey all! just bought this from a old bloke down the road. Was wondering what it is? The older cuts look very cuzco but the younger cuts look like peruvianus? any help much appreciated Thanks!
0 solomon Posted September 1, 2011 Bottom two look like your standard T. bridgesii, the top I would call peru/macro. From the same plant?
0 Bush Turkey Posted September 1, 2011 yep all fromm the same plant. the little ones were in shade
0 ballzac Posted September 1, 2011 The cut at the top left in the top pic also looks like bridgesii. You sure they weren't two intertwined plants or something? Wouldn't be the first time a plant had different parts that looked like different species though
0 tripsis Posted September 1, 2011 Good observation ballzac. Both the bottom photos and the top cutting in the top photo all look like typical bridgesii. Two plants growing together seems like a logical explanation.
0 Bush Turkey Posted September 1, 2011 no its not 2 plants it is 1 plant. All growing off the same stump. ill take a pic tomorrow that shows both big cuzco looking cuts and the smaller ones growing out of the same plant. 100% the same plant. i would of thought it was a cuzco till i seen the smaller cuts
0 tripsis Posted September 1, 2011 Any chance it was grafted?
0 Bush Turkey Posted September 1, 2011 (edited) nope. no chance. ill clear that up with a photo tomorrow. oh and im pretty sure he said it flowers red? Edited September 1, 2011 by Bush Turkey
0 Philocacti Posted September 1, 2011 i agree with the rest when i saw the 1st pic, i thought this ID is out of my league but the last 2 pictures look like bridgesii This would be an interesting ID since they all come from the same plant
0 Evil Genius Posted September 1, 2011 (edited) Hi Bush Turkey, its pretty much impossible they come from the same plant. The ones in Picture 1 have more spines and a diffrent spine pattern than the ones in Pic 2+3. Its true that their appearance can be very variabely and depending on the growing conditions they´ve been in but they dont suddenly grow a totally different type of spination just because they are in the shade. They small ones are clearly Bridgesii while the others look Cuzco or Peruvianoid. Im pretty much convinced that there needs to be another rootstock growing from somewhere around the other one. Please dig a hole. Edited September 1, 2011 by Evil Genius
0 Bush Turkey Posted September 1, 2011 i cant strees how much these are the same plant. the one in the last pic was cut from halway up the plant growing out of the cuzco looking one. ill clear it up with a pic tomorrow
0 Evil Genius Posted September 1, 2011 Just had another look with the glasses and you may be right. Im not sure but i think i recognized the same spine pattern in one or two places on the ones in pic 1 too. If my eyes werent mistakening me, it could really be one cactus. Looking at the fresh heads, probably Bridgesii.
0 Bush Turkey Posted September 1, 2011 yeah there is a bit of simular spination going on one of the young ones. ill take more photos and grab more cuts (he wants me to take all the fallen limbs) tomorrow. hopefully this will clear things up a bit. Thanks all for the input
0 Bush Turkey Posted September 2, 2011 haha you guys were right! i feel like the biggest douchebag There is a bridge behind it. The owner didnt even know there was 2 plants. I took a bridge cutting from where i circuled in black. You can see how i got confused. im such a tool
0 Evil Genius Posted September 2, 2011 lol Im so glad you didnt need to dig a hole first to find that out. You almost had me convinced...But hey, makes it even better. You got two types of cacti for the price of one.
