mauve Posted June 27, 2011 I bought those cactus on impulse while shopping for gardening supplies in Japan... I am not knowledgable on cactus identification at all, i just felt the good vibes emanating from those two beautiful plants. Any idea on what could they be ? Looks peruvianus to me but what do i know, this is the first time i bought any cactus ! Thank you for helping me !
0 Khala Posted June 27, 2011 Looks like textbook pachanoi to me...or peruvian. It's one of the two. Nice find.
0 ballzac Posted June 27, 2011 I'd say peruvianoid. Spines are too long for PC pach and wrong shape for 'true' pach.

0 Khala Posted June 27, 2011 Ah yes, I'm still learning, I thought the spines looked a little too long but wasn't sure. Cheers
0 PhoenixSon Posted June 27, 2011 (edited) nice find, the only tricho's that i saw not in botanical gardens in Japan was in a mad little mexican restaurant on kyushu island. Some seriously cheap lophophora online if you look around aswell. Still some interesting things to be found in sex shops and head shops exxy tho. edit; subtropical asia, are you around Okinawa? Nice spot Edited June 27, 2011 by spacemonk
0 mauve Posted June 27, 2011 Thank you for your answers everybody ! I tend to think peruvianoid as well. Spacemonk, you are right about my location ;) It is a very humid place, i fear the poor Trichs will be battling with rot and molds ! I remember seeing impressive lophophoras (bigger than tennis ball size) in Tokyo's gardening shops, wasn't very expensive too. I don't know if it is still legal/available or not i haven't beeing on the main island for a long time now. By the way, wasn't it the japanese growers who found how to graft lophophora to speed up the growth ?
0 bogfrog Posted June 28, 2011 possibly. i know that alot of special cultivars have come out of japan, through the process of selective breeding, especially astrophytom species. your trichos look like a possible hybrid between pachanoi and peruvianus. my uncle told me about seeing a massive lophophora on display in a mall in japan. if you ever spot anymore you should buy them! they are awesome plants
