Catha edulis seed

Recommended Posts

Guest reville

I have found the mother lode...

so whats a kilo of Catha seed worth anyway?

Some will be going to the AFSR - i havent decided whether to list it under the regular list species or use it as a fundraiser? ie charge say $4 or $5 for 20 healthy fresh seeds.

Id also like to find the going rate for larger amounts to international wholesalers.

Torsten? Lambo?

Ill wait for the response here...Thanks

I only know one guy who was offering kilos and his seed was getting a little old. My germination tests were not encouraging to by more seed from this supplier. Contact me and we can compare notes if this is the same guy or not.

A for price, he was charging AU 20cents each seed. No idea about kilo price as we never got that far. Maybe we should share a purchase??

You lucky bugger. Well done. How about some foliage? cuttings? BTW Rev, I just passed my driving test today so I am now mobile. Hang tight for some rare seeds from the Atherton tablelands people.

ok everybody.

i have shitloads so dont stress. i use taht term because nothing else but expletives do justice to the amount.but it need drying/claning etc so its some job..i havent even finished picking it and now im told of 2 more big trees that ill need to do in the next week..ahh the busy life

ill be doing the seed two ways..

the AFSR will have 30 seeds for $5

or.. for those wanting a plantation

$20 will buy you approx 150+ seeds

all hand sorted by myself of course so there'll be very few duds.

itll take time to process but if you send the $ and ill confirm when your order arrives so you can stop stressing

from my experience with fresh seed there will soon be a glut of catha plants across this wide brown land.. hehe

it makes a fantastic hedge BTW

and its a very pretty plant but it responds well to pruning.

Photos soon... (as soon as the film roll is finished)

Regards , seeds and plants I am looking for medicinals and by that I mean real ones folks not just ethnobotanical shamanic type ones .although I will accept those as well . I will exchange for tinctures that I have in my clinic . See posts on Ethnobotany or Majik forums .. I now have a list of all the tinctures I have and time allowing I will have it typed and on the puter . But if there is anything you specifically want ask and I can let you know .

I'd be interested in a few seed too.

However a couple of quick questions.

I can't find anything of its legality here in Oz, purely for ornamental/aesthetic/fragrant uses.

And reville, how do we pay money to the AFSR?

I don't mind sending $20 in the post but do you have a paypal account or something. How do folks do it?

um - paypal is that some kind of new escort service?

no nothing so fancy ,its just me my seeds and my post box.

Till it gets bigger thats all its going to be - no grandiose claims here.

you could send me $20 worth of stamps but of course cash is more useful in th immediate.

otherwise you can write a MO direct to me

better to e-mail me re this

Hi Reville

How viable are the seeds?

I have bought seeds before from over sea's and here in oz and none of them have been viable.

Have you tested them for viability?

If thay are I would be interested.

cheers Reville,

Received the seeds today.

When I first got here to Canberra I went to the Botanic gardens to see what A. Madenii looked like, and whether I could distinguish it from any other species. I gave up. And no, I didn't start digging up its roots. I'll germinate the extra seeds you gave me, but if what you say about REALLY needing A. Maidenii, then I guess I could go back to to the ANBG and borrow some. Dunno about the ethics but could always ask for some. (don't think a few seeds from a tree is gonna be missed) And there wont be any doubt over its identity. When do they produce seeds, autumn?

Any special instructions for germinating Catha? I guess a sandy dryish well-drained soil, + a bit of miracle grow now and again, and some sun? Any idea about how long the seeds may remain viable.

L8r Kai.

Well Reville,

Want the good news or the bad.

I went to the ANBG today, and saw the A. Maidenii. There was some old seed pods still attached to the tree :-) (with the A. Maidenii tag also attached) probably last years. Anyway, had a look at the pods and they has some seeds in.

However, they were black (like yours) but with a bright (unmistakable) orange cover at one end, (like yours but yours were white).

Most were slightly bigger as well. So I dunno which is the correct species? :-(

The A. Maidenii you supplied, how do you germinate them. ATM I have one seed between some damp bogroll.

Hopefully you'll read this otherwise I'll send this to the AFSR addy, if you don't reply here.

To germinate A. maidenii, just scratch the seed coat with some sand paper or a fine file (taking the glossyness of it) and placing the seeds in a cup of hot water from the tap. Leave to soak overnight and remove the swollen seeds to sow in a sandy soil mix.

With the seeds that didn't swell just repeat the process.

You can also just chuck the seeds in boiled water without having to scratch the seeds.

I couldn't find a another site quickly appart from Mulga's ( http://users.lycaeum.org/~mulga/acacia/index.html ) that describes the process for you.

The corners of nailclippers are quick and easy to use. It nicks the coat every time and there is no need to re-do them. If you're careful enough not to nick the testa you can have almost 100% germination from fresh seed. I use this method to sow into celltrays, where you only get one chance. No need to presoak either, which seems to eliminate fungal problems from too much moisture.

The boiling water method produced very unspectacular results for me, and the 'roasting' ended up with less than 5%.
