How to prevent etiolation and promote fat new growth?

Recommended Posts

I have been having an issue with etiolation (thinning top growth) on alot of my cactii, at first they didnt get much direct sunlight, then i moved them to get alot more direct sunlight (about 9 hours a day) and it helped a bit but they still arent getting as fat as id like.

I dont water very often, maybe once a month, and fertalize every 3 months or so..

It's starting to get colder now so i ahvent watered for a few months and dont plan on watering until it gets hot again, which my plan will be full sunlight and lots of fertalizing.

I did a bit of research but couldnt find some solid tips other then "get lots of sunlight" but that alone didnt really work too well for me.

Thanks muchly!

isnt over watering once of the main causes of thining?

Some thinning is normal if the cactuses were grown from fat cuts and have not yet developed extensive roots.

Some photos would be great though. :)

Not in 12+ years of growing them has that ever been my experience

these plants grow in Peru, sometimes in winter they get over 3 feet of rain, in the cold

in my experience it is very hard to over water them, i've seen them have 3+ weeks of rain in a row and thrive from it

However in some mixes this can be bad for the roots, but if the mix breathes and drains well then no problem they can endure almost constant water

move to sunnier spot to prevent etoliation

trichos LIKE lots of water during growing time and warm weather.

Not enough sunlight usually induces the etoliation.

sounds like etoliation again. be careful in moving to more sun.

in time, you might need some extra support for these, but they can be fine in time.

just take care with introducing them to more sun/light slowly.

grafting some of them is also a nice idea
