dreamscape Posted January 10, 2011 Hi guys, recently received some cacti from a source on this site- they sat in my garage for about 2 months while I was up north. Whilst in the garage, they kept growing strong. One of them now has grown a good 25cm, and roots from the tip down about 40cm. I have recently planted this cacti. Cut the new growth which includes about 10 roots approx 5mm long, waited to scar over then planted that too. The rest of this cacti is planted but still has another 10 or so roots coming from the top below the cut. My question is should i cut this section off and plant this too? Will the roots turn to pupps or just dry out and fall off? Would love to hear from anybody who has experienced this before. I'm new to this and would appreciate any info that would help. sparkles Posted January 10, 2011 Hi dreamscape, I've had similar happen before with roots forming from the sides of trichs...I had a bridgesii that loved to do it.. I have found that if you cut it and plant it, they just keep growing as the roots, and in one case I planted a cutting sideways like a log cause the roots were mostly coming out of one side. Managed to get pups popping up out the end after a while (though I lost that fella to rot a while later ) If you don't cut it, and just leave the roots on there, they don't turn into pups... just stay as roots, looking for water or ground I guess... I've got one bridgesii monstrose that put roots out of a pup a couple of months ago, and the roots have since made it all the way to the soil in the pot and kept growing!! :D
dreamscape Posted January 12, 2011 in one case I planted a cutting sideways like a log cause the roots were mostly coming out of one side. Managed to get pups popping up out the end after a while (though I lost that fella to rot a while later ) I was considering planting log style but wasnt sure about the rot problems. Never seen one done that way that isnt rotted. Thats cool about your monstrous one that put roots out and made it all the way to the soil in the pot and kept growing. as mine is pretty damn tall it would be amazing if that happened to mine. any more info or planting ideas would be helpful as the roots are probably 60cm from the ground. here are some pics of the two sections with roots. bogfrog Posted January 25, 2011 i think you should plant it semi sideways so they head will still grow upright with those roots are covered and keep most of the cut section above ground. you may even get pups growing off the areoles at the base which would look pretty neat. we have some logs planted sideways, no rot problems yet but they take ages to root through the skin compared to a dried cut. dreamscape Posted February 1, 2011 Thats what i was thinking the roots are now twice the size other than that the cacti dose not seem to be doing much at all. The other cacti that i got at the exact same time has now had double the growth of the one pictured here Will post some new pics when i get around to it. Original photos were real dodge better not have beers before hand this time. Cheers for the advice still was not real sure on what to do with it.
mac Posted February 1, 2011 You can pot it up in some free draining sandy mix on a 45 degree angle if your worried about rot, that way you can move it undercover when needed. only problem with a sandy mix would be that you may have to water every second or third day during the growing season
mud Posted February 1, 2011 Similar questions i've recently had spring to mind. I opted to cut any decent chunk off, that had a bucnh of roots and just let it do its thing till it pups. I dint know the logs regulalry rot though (?). I figured as long as its a high drainage soil mix it should be fine. If there's growth with roots, I figure the mighty cactus is near indestructible. Given that the chunk intended for growing is large enough to weather any significant potential dehyrdation. Would anyone please correct me? And, how to stimulate pupping? mud Posted February 13, 2011 Scraping away some dirt at the bottom, has given me 5 new pups in the last fortnight. Of a dozen cacti, the 2 that have 2 pups each (both very close to each other) also have wild lettuce, or grass growing randomly in the pot. moist air exposure and extra nutrients seem to do it.. dreamscape Posted February 16, 2011 Hi guys just thought I should put some progress pics up. Loved the 45 degree idea and was intent on given her the slanty treatment. When I was about to pot it though I realized that there were 4 tiny pups sprouting from the tip over the last 3 weeks this has been the growth since I first found the pups. Pretty amazing for only three weeks I thought. Now I'm probably more inclined to leave as is. Still undecided though. Also any ideas on if the black marks on the cut are harmful to the cacti.
