Mmm, chiku. They taste like dates. Didn't know they were in Australia, but it's not surprising really.

mmmm your right, going by your pics the leaves look alot broader and not as smooth. fruit is almost identical but.

Did you taste one of the fruits mate? LoL or should i say, did they seem edible.

Is it possible it's some sort of ficus?

Hmm, not chiku then.

If it it were a fig, the fruits would have a hole in the end of them.

Looks like a walnut?

 I was waiting for someone to say that. I have a black walnut (Juglans nigra) and it looks like that. Scrape the skin and it should stain your hand brown (its used for staining baskets), bust it open and you should see a crushed baby walnut

i second (third it i guess) that it looks like walnut.

if i remember correctly, the fruits will be very oily on the outside if it is.

it might be another juglans, but leaf broadness (and size) are not a valid id'ing tool.

this tree is just very happy and seems to grow virgorous, and if that happens juglans leaves can get very broad.

Well if thats the case i still reckon its a Manilkara zapota , but then it also looks like a Black Walnut....

but going by what Naja said about the fruits being on there for so long, Walnut seems more likely, as Sapodilla would have over-ripened by now.

can't wait till we know for sure what it is, god i love the competition, and your zapota guess is a good side bet! unfortunately we don't know the exact climat or location and this would help, because zapota grows more tropical, and most juglans are cold climat (pecan nut can take it warmer for example).

used to have one in the back yard, made a preetty gnarly liqueur out of the green fruits last year, spiced with cinnamon and cloves and after sitting for a few months had this warm rich spiced coffe/chicory type of flavour, was pretty good. bust it out too early and its bitter as..

Cut a green fruit and inside, not too far inside is very hard nut. So I'm guessing it is a walnut. The greeen fruit smell wild, almost a tad safrolicious.
